WORKPLACE MOVES

Over the past year I have been asked repeatedly if there is anything that can be done to insure job security in these uncertain times. It is a really tough question. Many excellent employees have lost their jobs through no fault of their own when their units were eliminated or their companies merged.

Yet as I’ve written before there are some steps you can take that may help you through this challenging time. For starters it is important to be visible. Now is not the time to put your head in the sand. Be willing to take additional assignments, to demonstrate the value you bring to the company. At the same time be honest with yourself and evaluate your performance and attitude. Are there ways you can improve both? And remember to be nice, this may not be the time to be a maverick; it might set you up as an easy target.

This is also a good time to build and strengthen key relationships. You want to be seen as a valuable, team player. While hard work is important, building those relationships is equally as important as your hard work.  Make an effort to get out and about. While people tend to become more insular at times like this, make sure you are visible. This is a time when connections may prove invaluable in both the near and long-term. This might also be a good time to build your skills – is there something you can do that would make you a more valuable employee.

The greatest job security may come from being viewed as a star. Even in a really tough economy, bosses go to great lengths to protect their star performers, those they view as their most valuable players. They know that when the economy turns around they will need those folks on their team and won’t want to lose them to the competition. Finally, as tough as this is, try your best to maintain a positive attitude.

INTERESTING READ

Over the past year two of my favorite clients have mentioned the book, “The Secret”, by Rhonda Byrne. I was a bit hesitant, even skeptical. I thought it would be filled with platitudes… but decided to read it anyway. The book is built on the premise of self attraction. You attract what you think. What you believe is what appears. This is something I do believe and yet I was hesitant. When I finally read the book recently I had to laugh. The author used the example of visualizing (attracting) parking spaces. Whenever I’m headed to a parking lot, be it for an appointment or at the grocery store I always tell myself that I’ll find a parking spot up close. Funny thing, 90% of the time I find that close spot. What does this say - about me, about “The Secret” and the Laws of Attraction?

FINAL THOUGHT

Create your day in advance by thinking the way you want it to go, and you will create your life intentionally. – “The Secret”
