2. Welcome Notes.

It has been several months since the last issue of Optimal Performance Newsletter, The New Corporate Leader, and some time since the publication of Five Star Newsletter.

In January 2000, The Elite Group.com Pty Ltd was born. Margaret Krause and Christine McDougall, the two dynamic principles of The Elite Group.com, decided to work the power of synergy and team, and created a company that has Extraordinary Leadership, Innovative Thought and Excellence at its core. We have amalgamated our individual newsletters and created this new newsletter, The Extraordinary Leader. As always, we are open to your questions and comments about the topics we present and the work that we do together.

Our intention is that The Extraordinary Leader will provide you with valuable tips, ideas, tools and inspired thinking to support you on your leadership journey. Please enjoy our newsletter and we do hope you will forward it on to others, as that is how it grows.

"What Makes An Extraordinary Leader?"

Extraordinary is defined as exceptional in character. A leader holds many positions in the eyes of modern society. We have the tyrant as leader, the boss as leader, the commander as leader. We have the mesmerizing and persuasive leadership of Hitler, with his ability to lead, yet his purpose was destructive. On the flip side we have the inspirational and visionary leaders, leaders such as Nelson Mandela and Mahatma Gandi. Throughout time, we have leaders who lead by authority, and leaders who lead by being the role model.

The Extraordinary Leader we will be talking about in this newsletter are the leaders who are the role models; who inspires greatness; who are visionaries and action-oriented.

I was once told that a great leader holds the space for his/her people to become greater than him or her. This kind of leader leaves their ego behind and leads from a place of wanting his/her people to step into their own magnificence. Some leaders are transparent, and their team gets all the accolades. This is exactly what they want, as no leader can lead without a team.

Why would you want to become a better leader? What is behind your desire? I ask myself this question. Why do I want to become a better leader?

To me, leadership is about inspiration; filling the spirit within us. When we pause and take the time to listen to our own inner voice, when we allow the quiet time to be present, this is a time when the interference to our own knowledge is at its minimal, and our own truth can be heard. My passion is seeing people step up to their own authentic truth, to realize their full potential. This is why I want to become a better leader.

Timothy Gallway, author of the wonderful books "The Inner Game of Tennis", "The Inner Game of Golf" and "The Inner Game of Work", talks about performance as being potential minus interference. We all have an endless well of potential, and we are all capable of amazing things. If only we would or could get rid of the interference! A leader is one who can clear the interference and allow his/her potential to shine through.

How do we remove the interference?
The journey of the leader begins as always with their own journey. Unless you are working on your own leadership - the leadership of yourself, the chances of you leading others powerfully are remote.

~~Coaches Comment.
If you have a promise you have been making to yourself for a long time, a promise you know you really want, E-mail us with it and we will set up a Personal Leadership program to support you in keeping your promises to as a leader. You! E-mail info@the-elite-group.com with "My Promise" in the subject line.

Only last week, one of our coaching clients was at breaking point. He was overworked, suffering from clouded thinking, being ineffective, and showing poor performance. At our request, he took four days off. In the first 24 hours the world and his view of it shifted dramatically. His focus came back, his energy picked up and his enthusiasm was restored. What happened? I liken this to a small jar filled to the brim with ideas - stuffed. No movement can occur. Take the jar and place it into a very large container and open the lid. The ideas now have space to move and integrate. Creating space in our lives is one of the tools of an extraordinary leader.

What are the components of an extraordinary leader?
* They have space in their life to think, to be still, to smell the roses.
* They have the language to speak clearly, concisely and inclusively.
* They have great coaching skills. They coach people versus tell people.
* They are visionaries.
* They inspire action.
* They are role models - they walk their talk.
* They take time to invest in their own development.
* They are open and flexible.
* They tell the truth, without damaging others.
* They do not try to be liked or nice, but rather, they are bold.
* They lead because of what they want for others.
* They have a team and they honor their team.
* They know where they are going.

Please send your ideas on what makes a great leader to info@the-elite-group.com with "Great Ideas" in the subject line, and we will compile a more comprehensive list for our next newsletter edition.

5. Monthly Point Of Focus.

Each month we will have a single point of focus for you to apply in your life.

This month the focus point will be on awareness of how full or empty is your idea jar. How much space do you have in your life?

The point of focus is not about changing anything. Simply have your awareness on space. Notice when you have space and when you do not. Notice how you feel when you have space, and how you feel when you do not. Notice what having "space" means to you.

6. Resources.

Timothy Gallway "The Inner Game of Work"
Published in January 2000 this book is written by a master coach who will transform the way you perceive work. I have studied this book with great gusto, and learnt a great deal from this great book.

Joseph Jaworski "Synchronicity - The Inner Path of Leadership." (1998)
A personal journey into leadership that is both moving and educational. Very inspiring.
