5. THE POWER OF THE PRESENT MOMENT
~~*~~*~~*~~*~~*~~*~~*~~*~~*
"I hate detours!" I exclaimed to a friend the other day as we found ourselves caught in a traffic jam. "Isn't it a perfect autumn day?" she responded as she rolled down the car window, leaned back and sighed. That's the difference between my friend and me. I'm a bit driven. I want to get from here to there in the quickest way possible. She, however, manages to at least enjoy the journey.
This was one of those "Ah-ha" moments that made me more aware of a pattern I've been trying to break. I see it in myself and so many of my friends and clients; it's the plague of rushing, busy-ness, anxiety and stress. What's the big hurry?! Slowing down is an especially important concept to keep in mind during the holiday season when we're apt to feel overwhelmed.
Remember to check in with your inner guidance when you feel anxious. This feeling of hurry is self-imposed, as you can shift it in order to feel more relaxed and in the flow of life. I used to think of spiritual practice as going to church, meditating for a half-hour, or reading a book on prayer. It can include all those things, and yet for me, it means taking the risk to trust the Universe -- to slow down and savor life. It is all unfolding at its own pace.
I focus on the present moment, taking a deep breath. I'm aware that even as I've been writing these words, I'm rushing. My intention was to finish this newsletter this morning -- self-imposed pressure. I breathe in again and I'm aware of a bird singing in the trees near my office. I notice the sun through the skylight brightening the fresh yellow daisies on my desk. I look out the window and see the beginnings of new growth on the old trees. I open the window and enjoy the cool breeze as it plays with my hair. I have paused for just a few moments, halted the jumble of harsh thoughts urging me to finish my writing for the day. I am reminded of a Zen poem. "Sitting quietly, doing nothing, Spring comes and grass grows by itself."
Simple.
Stop for a moment.
Breathe.
Focus.
Check in with Spirit.
Appreciate.
Slow down.
Begin again.
Ahh...
(I could love a life like this.)

I've written a "Prosperity Prayer" as part of a new book. I've used it myself, shared it with some clients and a few friends and we've all had some amazing results. Money, ideas and opportunities seem to come miraculously after saying the prayer for a few days to a few weeks.
