4. MAKE YOUR VOCATION YOUR VACATION

I've always envied those people who knew exactly what they wanted to be when they grew up. There were kids in my high school class who knew they were destined to have careers as veterinarians, accountants, nurses or lawyers. I think those folks are rare. Most of us struggle with this question throughout our life. We try to come up with a specific occupation that will satisfy all our needs at all stages of our lives.
But what's not so rare is knowing what we're drawn to. It's almost as if there were a blueprint somewhere deep in our souls that lays out the best plan for our unfolding. It might be an interest that causes us to read any and all books on a certain topic. It could be a hobby we do in our spare time. Our calling might present itself as an issue we feel passionately about. As surprising as it may seem, most of us have a pretty good sense of our passion when we're children. We've just forgotten it and gone ahead and done things that are practical, logical and rational with our lives. It's as if, like the Bender quote above states, "We've left our hearts at home."
The historian, Arnold Toynbee, once noted "The supreme accomplishment is to blur the line between work and play." However, most of us make choices based on family expectations, the current job market or whatever is offered to us that enables us to pay the bills. We tune out the yearnings of our soul that call us to do the thing we're here to do. We convince ourselves we don't know what we want and even if we did have a clear sense, we believe we don't know how to get from here to there.
Our job is usually our main source of income and the vast majority of us spend at least half of our waking hours at this occupation. To say that it's important to enjoy the work you do is an understatement. Former president Theodore Roosevelt stated, "Far and away the best prize that life has to offer is the chance to work hard at work worth doing." How do you discover the vocation that makes you look forward to starting the day and makes the time fly by when you're doing it? Depending on which research study you read, anywhere from 40% to 60% of us don't like our current work. That's an awful lot of wasted time, energy and talent.
Most people ask the wrong questions, "How can I make the most money?" "What job could I choose that I'd be happy with for the rest of my life?" "What career would have the most job security?" Sometimes we ask questions that are too general, "What should I do when I grow up?" Understandably, we want quick, sure-fire answers to these questions. It doesn't usually work that way. The answers come in stops and starts and we meet with detours and diversions as we seek the response.
I've often joked that I wish we were born with a little instruction guide that, if followed, would lead to a successful life. It took me many years to understand that, in fact, intuition was the guide I was seeking. Instead of written instructions, God provided His wise direction for our calling via a still, quiet inner voice... our intuition.
God has a plan for your life. That plan is rarely shown to you all at once. It takes patience, trust and faith to allow the often-miraculous details to unfold. It's similar to putting a giant jigsaw puzzle together. You may have fragments that are clear but until the final pieces fall into place you can't see the larger picture.
It's time to put the pieces together. You were born with natural talents, skills and interests. Your life has been about discovering them and using them for a larger purpose to enrich, inspire and help others. There is a saying from Buddha, "Your work is to discover your work and then with all your heart to give yourself to it."
The Universe is a great teacher. People who have a sense of purpose and who follow their passion are rewarded with joy and energy and are fueled by inspiration. It's as if they are dancing with life and the Universe rewards the dancers with abundance in all forms. It's time to put on your dancing shoes, have fun and kick up your heels! Dancing lessons anyone?

This is a terrific book to buy for yourself or for a friend this holiday season. In "Let Go, Let Miracles Happen," Cordova illustrates the four different types of spiritual surrender and how, when faced with adversity, we can grow and heal and experience miracles:
1. Let go of what is not working in your life. Releasing the negative in your life makes room for the positive -- like love, serendipity, and abundance.
2. Surrendering your problem to God/A Higher Power/The Universe. If you can ask for help, surrender your will, have faith, and listen for the answer, you can experience miracles.
3. Go with the flow. This means giving up your belief that life has to be a struggle. When you follow your Divine intuition, life becomes easier.
4. Surrender to love. Cordova suggests that life is transformed when you choose love over fear and anger.

In the November issue I asked for lessons or stories you'd like to share on the topic of prosperity. I compiled and edited some of the responses that follow. An attitude of gratitude was a theme that many people wrote about. Thanks to all of you who responded.

This was echoed by Kay, who wrote: "I realized I have been blessed abundantly, in so many ways, too many ways to even count. I thank God everyday... being thankful just brings more good into my life.
Claudia states: "I try to keep my focus on what I have and not what I don't have. I also try not to say things like, 'I can't afford this' or to talk in negative terms in order to realize abundance."
Suzanne, a personal coach from Massachusetts, wrote with this suggestion: "I learned to take a small amount of money each week and spend it on something truly joyful, or on something I wouldn't normally spend it on."
Carolyn from Geneva, Switzerland echoed something a number of you noted about writing down prayer requests: "I pray through writing. I ask God to help me in written form and it comes automatically."
