Tapping Your Inner Genius Excerpt from “Trust Your Gut: (Page 188) Buy Trust Your Gut on Amazon.com at Trust Your Gut When you close your doors, and make darkness within, remember never to say that you are alone, for you are not alone; nay, God is within, and your genius is within. And what need have they of light to see what you are doing? -- Epictetus, Roman philosopher Masaru Ibuka, founder and chairman of Japan's Sony Corp., was asked in an interview, "What is the secret of your success?" He said he had a ritual. Preceding a business decision, he would drink herbal tea. Before he drank, he asked himself, "Should I make this deal or not?" If the tea gave him indigestion, he wouldn't make the deal. "I trust my gut, and I know how it works," he said. "My mind is not that smart, but my body is." Ibuka discovered a way to tap into his inner genius. How can you discover yours? Think of a decision you made recently that you’re unequivocally sure was a great choice. Perhaps it resulted in a big sale or customer accolades, or it simply gave you great personal satisfaction. Whatever the situation, bring it to mind. Most likely there were strong logical reasons for making this decision. However, there was probably a strong intuitive reason as well. You want to become familiar with how your intuition conveys a “yes” response. Spend a few moments checking in with yourself. Here are some questions to ask: How did you know it was right? Where did you feel it in your body? Was there a feeling or emotion that led up to this decision? If you close your eyes, what image(s) come to mind when you think of this choice? Was there a word or words you heard in your mind when you were contemplating it? What made this decision stand out over other options you could have chosen? How would you know if you were to get this similar “go ahead” message from your intuition in the future? You may want to repeat this exercise with a bad choice you made. While possibly more painful to examine, it will nonetheless provide helpful clues about how your intuition communicates to you that you’re heading in the wrong direction. You’re the expert on yourself and your intuitive responses. It’s as if your inner genius has its own unique language with which it conveys its wisdom. Your job is to be a skilled translator. 6. Resources You Can Use A few months ago I introduced you to Mike Dooley at TUT.com. He sends out wonderful “Messages From the Universe” that you can receive via email on a daily basis. Here’s a recent one: “For every single time-space manifestation, from catching a cold to the accumulation of massive personal wealth, a shifting of props and persons must be choreographed from here with mind-boggling precision. Taking into account not only all of your other thoughts, beliefs and expectations as they change from moment to moment, but those of everyone else on the planet, so that not one of you, not one, is ever denied getting exactly what they think about. And to answer the often unasked question, "Yes, you can still have it all, no matter what others in your life might think, say or do.
