Councilmember Brown Congratulates the 2006 Mayor's Youth Leadership Institute Participants

Today, Councilmember Brown joined the Department of Employment Services to celebrate the completion of the 2006 Mayor’s Youth Leadership Institute. Held at the Blackburn Center at Howard University, Brown served as the guest speaker for the closing program and encouraged youth to utilize their skills, talents and ideas to impact change in the District of Columbia. “As a fellow alumnus, I am especially proud for you to represent our next generation of leaders,” commented Brown. “You could have chosen to be anywhere this summer and I’m excited to see a glimpse of your futures,” said Brown.

In conjunction with the closing ceremony, Councilmember Brown invited the Washington Nationals to join in the celebration where owners Stan Kasten, Alphonso Malden and Paxton Baker distributed Nationals game wear and reminded the participants of their opportunity to pursue their goals. To further celebrate the 2006 MYLI program, Councilmember Brown brought tickets for each participant to attend Sunday’s ballgame to see the Nationals play the New York Mets; the National owners contributed an additional 200 tickets.

“Baseball is now here and I want every young person in the District of Columbia to see the games and participate in the economic rewards of our city,” said Brown.

The Mayor's Youth Leadership Institute (MYLI) was founded in 1979 as a year-round program to train District of Columbia youth in the concepts of leadership and self-development. MYLI is a four level program designed to train District youth, ages 14 to 17, in leadership and self-development. The program allows youth leaders to shadow city government officials, as well as serve as youth ambassadors for the District of Columbia. In previous years, 75 young people participated in the year-round program and 150 youth participated in the Summer Training Program.

To strengthen the program’s criteria and increase enrollment capacity, Councilmember Brown authored legislation-now-law, “Mayor’s Youth Leadership Institute Act of 2005,” which allowed over 400 youth to participate in this year’s program, including a two-week stay on campus at George Washington University.
