Dear Friends,
As the summer comes to an end, we can look forward to the start of another school year filled with anticipation that our children will be enriched with a new learning experience and an opportunity to share their knowledge.
This school year, my wife and I are especially excited to see our two children, Lauren and Kwame, II begin their academic experience in DC Public Schools on Monday. In addition to getting book bags and completing immunization procedures, I share your desire to ensure that our children receive quality education in a comfortable learning environment that encourages them to pursue their academic dreams. In order to have successul students we must be active parents. Our partnership with our child's principal and teachers will allow us to reinforce the lessons taught in the classroom and values taught at home. To begin this relationship, I will introduce a Sense of the Council resolution that encourages District of Columbia Public Schools to offer a Parent Orientation Night at every D.C. public school during the week before the opening day of the school year. A school-sponsored Parent Orientation Night would offer parents useful information and guidance to get the school year started calmly and efficiently. I hope that my colleagues will support this measure and that DC Public Schools embraces this activity. As we look forward to a new school year, I am delighted to introduce new methods for working together to raise our next generation of leaders. Sincerely, Kwame R. Brown ********************************************************************** Come Out and Help Make Your Neighborhood Schools Beautiful! The District of Columbia Public Schools (DCPS) and their communities are preparing for the 2nd annual DCPS Beautification Day, scheduled for Saturday, August 26, 2006. The community event, a citywide cleanup and spruce-up at all DCPS schools, will take place from 8:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. Volunteers from across the city are invited to come together to sweep, mulch, paint, plant flowers, pick up trash, and perform many other duties designed to improve the appearance of school facilities and help prepare them for students when they return to class on August 28. Volunteers are always welcome. If you haven't registered to participate, please come and see how you can assist with the gardening, painting a clean-up activities that will improve school facilities to welcome new and returning faculty and students.
