Today is World AIDS Day: December 1, 2006
Dear Friends,
Today we have the opportunity to unite throughout the city and around the world to fight against the spread of HIV and AIDS. As you know, this fatal yet preventable disease plagues our city. Let's remove the discussion of HIV/AIDS from our list of taboo subjects. It's time that we talk with our family members, our children, and friends about the ways we can support our community through education, intervention, and prevention. Join the Whitman Walker Clinic in holding a candlelight vigil on Freedom Plaza, 14th Street & Pennsylvania Ave., NW, along with the unveiling of "Our Heroes" art exhibit( to be displayed inside the John Wilson Bldg.), honoring the significant people and places the 25-year history of HIV/AIDS in DC. Know your HIV status. Confidential and/or anonymous testing for exposure to HIVthe virus that causes AIDSis available at several locations across the city. To learn more about HIV testing and counseling, or for information on how to reduce your risk of contracting HIV, please call the Administration for HIV Policy and Programs at (202) 332-EXAM. Together, we can teach our community that knowing your HIV status is better than guessing. Let today serve as the beginning of our commitment to help stop the spread of AIDS. Sincerely, Kwame R. Brown ******************************************************************************************************************************************** About the Administration for HIV Policy and Programs: The Administration for HIV Policy and Programs partners with health and community-based organizations to provide HIV/AIDS prevention and care services to District and Washington area eligible residents. The proposed bill would require the Mayor to appoint a 35-member Task Force to bring back to the Mayor and the Council recommendations for how the city can eliminate homicides. The task force would develop policy and programmatic recommendations for government and non-government entities working to end murder in Washington, DC. The task force would also analyze studies about the causes of murder nationally and locally. The task force should propose recommendations that would lead to a reduction and ultimately an end to murder in DC. The task force would identify agencies to be responsible for taking the proposed actions. The task force report would include estimates of costs and timetables for implementation. Councilmember Brown introduced the bill on September 19, 2006, to establish a unified approach to proactively ending crime in the District of Columbia and hopes that all groups can work together to apply more preventive methods. One murder in DC is one murder too many, Councilmember Brown expressed. The resources to end murder in DC exist, but there needs to be a comprehensive, proactive and permanently sustained approach to working to end murder in DC...there are things we can do on the front-end to provide an environment for our youth to succeed." ******************************************************************************************************************************************** LSDBE Hearing: December 12, 2006 Councilmember Kwame R.
