It's Official: DC is Smokefree! January 2, 2007

The District of Columbia's smoke-free workplaces law takes full effect January 2, 2007 when workplaces, restaurants and bars will be clear of toxic secondhand smoke and District workers and patrons will be granted the right to breathe smokefree air. The D.C. Council overwhelmingly approved the smoke free workplaces law,the " Department of Health Functions Clarification Amendment Act of 2006," in January of this year, which Councilmember Brown co-introduced.

"After years of uncompromisingly advocating for smoke free workplaces, I am proud to know that we have made significant progress to effecting change," said Councilmember Brown. "We are on a promising path to operating in a healthier, family-friendly environment. I thank the residents of the District of Columbia for tenaciously expressing their desire and the need for our city to provide healthy and safe environments for all of our workers and families."

Christmas Tree-Cycling, Winter Holiday Trash and Recycling Collection Schedule

In observance of New Year’s Day, Monday, Jan. 1, 2007 and the national day of mourning declared for President Gerald R. Ford’s funeral on Tuesday, Jan. 2, there will be some changes to DPW services next week.

New Year’s Day
Monday, January 1, 2007
On New Year’s Day, the District government will be observing normal holiday operations - offices will be closed and most services suspended. There will be no DPW trash and recyclables collection and no parking enforcement on that day. Residential trash and recyclables collection will slide one day for the remainder of the week citywide, beginning Tuesday.

National Day of Mourning for President Gerald R. Ford
Tuesday, January 2, 2007
On Tuesday, a national day of mourning, the District government will again be closed. There will be no DPW parking enforcement, accept as necessary to support security and other requirements for the former president’s state funeral.

However, residential trash and recyclables WILL be collected and bulk trash appointments will be honored on Tuesday. In other words, Monday’s trash and recyclables should be set out on Tuesday. Additionally, the Fort Totten Trash Transfer Station will be open for resident drop-offs from 1 - 5 pm.

Christmas trees and other holiday greenery will be collected curbside from January 2rd -13th, 2007. This year, the District will be tree-cycling - using holiday trees for city beautification projects. This involves first reducing the trees by putting them through a chipper. After a drying period, the rough wood chips will be mixed with leaf compost and used for city beautification projects.

Residents who receive DC trash collection service are encouraged to put holiday trees and other greenery in curbside tree boxes by January 2, 2007. Trees will be picked up during a special two-week collection from January 2 - 13. Since these trees will be tree-cycled, it is important that they be free of any kind of ornamentation. Additionally, they must be set out loose, not in bags.

Residents who wish to keep their trees longer should put them out at the normal point of trash collection (curbside or alley) after January 13. DPW will then collect the trees along with the regular trash, as truck space permits over the following weeks. Trees mixed with trash cannot be tree-cycled.
