Brown Deplores Fatal Shooting and Daily Acts of Violence

Councilmember Brown comments on fatal shooting of 17-year old girl at a Northwest nightclub that occurred over the weekend and daily incidents that rob our children's futures:

"Each time a gun sounds off, we cut short the lives of our future leaders. I am always saddened by the loss of our District residents, especially our young adults. One loss is too many. Each violent death rings an alarm in our community that signals urgency to reexamine our methods of protecting our residents.
I send my deepest condolences to the families of children lost to violence. Although there is nothing we can do to restore Ms. Ford's life and remove the pain experienced by her family and friends, we can work collectively to end murders in D.C. I implore anyone who knows anything or witnessed this incident to come forward. As a both father and a legislator, I strongly support our community efforts to develop laws that adequately secure our patrons and protect our minors from venues where alcohol is served. We all must work together to end murders in D.C."

OFFICE OF TAX AND REVENUE KICKS OFF 2007 TAX FILING SEASON

(Washington, DC) As 2007 begins, the Office of Tax and Revenue (OTR) is making the new filing season less taxing for District residents by offering electronic filing for a faster refund, extended service hours and a redesigned tax booklet. Taxpayers will also benefit from a number of tax law changes this year, which include an increased personal exemption and standard deduction.

“We are committed to providing taxpayers with the information and services they need to meet their tax obligations quickly and easily,” said Sherryl Hobbs Newman, deputy chief financial officer for tax and revenue.

Newman encourages taxpayers to file their returns electronically to ensure an accurate return and to receive their refund more quickly, usually within three to five days. OTR offers two electronic ways to file: the free electronic Taxpayer Service Center (eTSC) and the federal/state e-file program. With the eTSC taxpayers can file and pay their taxes online and check the status of their refund. The federal/state e-file program allows taxpayers to transmit both their DC and federal returns electronically using an approved commercial software program, either from their home computer or with the assistance of a tax practitioner.

District taxpayers will get extra time to file their income tax return this year. Because April 15 falls on a Sunday and April 16 is a legal holiday in the District–Emancipation Day–the filing deadline is extended to Tuesday, April 17.

OTR customer service representatives are available to assist taxpayers Monday through Friday, except holidays, from 8:30 am until 4:30 pm by calling (202) 727-4TAX or visiting the walk-in service center at 941 North Capitol Street, NE, on the first floor. Extended service hours will be available April 2-17 from 8:15 am to 8 pm.

BROWN PROMOTES FATHERHOOD WITH FREE SCREENING OF THE PURSUIT OF HAPPYNESS

On Saturday, January 13, 2007, Councilmember Kwame R. Brown held a private screening of the motion picture, “The Pursuit of Happyness,” to encourage D.C.’s fathers to persevere despite both the social and financial odds, to pursue their goals and strengthen their relationships with their families.

After viewing the film, Councilmember Brown invited District fathers that may be experiencing similar difficulties, to see the movie at Regal Gallery Place Stadium in hopes that more fathers can be both moved and motivated to action. “The Pursuit of Happyness is such an inspiring film on so many levels,” said Brown. “As a father of two, I hope that every father can watch the film and leave the theatre with a refreshed outlook on life and stronger commitment to improve their environment to change their present situation to improve their children’s future.”

In partnership with WPGC 95.5 FM Radio, Regal Cinemas and local mentoring organizations such as the DC Fatherhood Initiative (DCFI), Councilmember Brown gave free admission to a Saturday morning screening for 130 fathers.
