From Turning the Dirt to Ribbon-Cutting: Brown Desires to Bring Growth to D.C.'s Neighborhoods with Economic Development Chairmanship
Council Period 17 began with new leadership, new Councilmembers and with newly restructured oversight, Councilmember Brown was appointed Chair of the Council's Committee on Economic Development, a committee responsible for matters related to economic, industrial and commercial development policy; the disposition of property for economic development purposes; tourism, cultural affairs; international business and affairs, and local business development policy and programs. As Chair of the Council's former Special Committee on a Comprehensive Policy for Local Business Development, Brown's desire to establish opportunities for growth where residents are the primary benefactors to the city's economic abundance continues, as he looks forward bringing projects to completion to enrich the lives of District residents. "We currently have at least 29 projects throughout the city that were started. Now is the time to move the discussion forward to action that will open doors to our new communities that avail new opportunities for growth. We have a blueprint; the Committee will focus on ensuring that our fiscally responsible development opportunities meet the needs of our citizens first."

Taxpayers will also benefit from a number of tax law changes this year, which include an increased personal exemption and standard deduction. We are committed to providing taxpayers with the information and services they need to meet their tax obligations quickly and easily, said Sherryl Hobbs Newman, deputy chief financial officer for tax and revenue. Newman encourages taxpayers to file their returns electronically to ensure an accurate return and to receive their refund more quickly, usually within three to five days. OTR offers two electronic ways to file: the free electronic Taxpayer Service Center (eTSC) and the federal/state e-file program. With the eTSC taxpayers can file and pay their taxes online and check the status of their refund. The federal/state e-file program allows taxpayers to transmit both their DC and federal returns electronically using an approved commercial software program, either from their home computer or with the assistance of a tax practitioner. District taxpayers will get extra time to file their income tax return this year. Because April 15 falls on a Sunday and April 16 is a legal holiday in the DistrictEmancipation Daythe filing deadline is extended to Tuesday, April 17. OTR customer service representatives are available to assist taxpayers Monday through Friday, except holidays, from 8:30 am until 4:30 pm by calling (202) 727-4TAX or visiting the walk-in service center at 941 North Capitol Street, NE, on the first floor. Extended service hours will be available April 2-17 from 8:15 am to 8 pm. ****************************************************************************************************** BROWN PROMOTES FATHERHOOD WITH FREE SCREENING OF THE PURSUIT OF HAPPYNESS On Saturday, January 13, 2007, Councilmember Kwame R. Brown held a private screening of the motion picture, The Pursuit of Happyness, to encourage D.C.s fathers to persevere despite both the social and financial odds, to pursue their goals and strengthen their relationships with their families. After viewing the film, Councilmember Brown invited District fathers that may be experiencing similar difficulties, to see the movie at Regal Gallery Place Stadium in hopes that more fathers can be both moved and motivated to action. The Pursuit of Happyness is such an inspiring film on so many levels, said Brown. As a father of two, I hope that every father can watch the film and leave the theatre with a refreshed outlook on life and stronger commitment to improve their environment to change their present situation to improve their childrens future. In partnership with WPGC 95.5 FM Radio, Regal Cinemas and local mentoring organizations such as the DC Fatherhood Initiative (DCFI), Councilmember Brown gave free admission to a Saturday morning screening for 130 fathers.
