BROWN CELEBRATES GRAND OPENING OF CARDOZO CONSTRUCTION & DESIGN FACILITY

Yesterday, Councilmember Kwame R. Brown joined Mayor Adrian Fenty, Chairman Vincent Gray, Superintendent Clifford B. Janey, D.C. Board of Education and public officials to celebrate the grand opening of the renovated classroom and hands-on training facility for the Academy of Construction at Cardozo Senior High School. The new space provides carpentry, electrical heating, ventilation and air conditioning instruction and pre-apprenticeship certification to DC students. A staunch advocate for vocational education programs and a former student of Phelps Career High School, Brown was elated to celebrate its opening and further development of a career and technical education program that teaches employable skills to our young adults. Below is a statement from Councilmember Brown commending the progress of the Cardozo Academy and stressing the need for more programs throughout D.C. Public Schools:

“It’s exciting to know that our young adults, our young residents, will soon operate the cranes that lift our raw materials. With state of-the-art equipment in the Cardozo classroom, our students learn first-hand how to provide quality services and are assured that we want the best for their futures. As the program continues to expand, welcoming more students to learn career building skills, I hope that we can open the door of opportunity to more high schools, where our graduates will be prepared to meet the workforce and build further on their knowledge. Next year, I look forward to the reopening of Phelps Career High School and continuing improvements to our educational infrastructure.”
