Brown Holds Forum to Motivate At-Risk Teen Girls, Ends with Surprise Visit from Beyoncé
On Thursday, August 9, at the Verizon Center, Councilmember Kwame R. Brown held a forum to aspire District teen girls to make life choices that will change their futures and influence their peers.
Councilmember Brown decided to host an event that solely focuses on young women after hearing concerns from local community leaders and youth mentoring organizations about the lack of intervention methods to assist at-risk teen girls. Seventy-five girls ages 12-18 attended the forum, representing citywide youth mentoring organizations, including Peaceoholics, Inc. and Covenant House of Washington. At the Defining Our Own Destiny forum, participants discussed the importance of pursing your career goals; persevering academically despite obstacles and how to be a peacemaker in their community-ending violence on all levels. The young ladies also participated in a demonstration by Break the Cycle, Inc. a group that works to prevent domestic violence by educating youth on healthy teen dating. At the close of the event, Grammy Award-winning recording artist, actress Beyoncé greeted the girls. Most shockingly, the teens were surprised to receive complimentary tickets to the show.
