ENJOY LABOR DAY WEEKEND

I would like to thank all citizens who have worked hard this year to make the District of Columbia’s economy strong. Labor Day is a celebration of your industrious efforts to provide a better quality of life for our families. While we prosper, let us not forget that there are those of us still struggling. As the Chair of Economic Development, I am committed to increasing employment opportunities by helping local small businesses thrive. During the D.C. Main Streets tour I have been encouraged by the determination of our city’s business owners. I look forward to working with them and our city’s labor force to continue moving forward. Enjoy your well deserved rest this weekend.

Sincerely,
Councilmember Kwame R. Brown

FIRST WEEK OF SCHOOL STARTS & COUNCILMEMBER BROWN VISITS DUPONT AND ANACOSTIA MAIN STREETS

COUNCILMEMBER BROWN TAKES HIS CHILDREN TO THEIR 1ST DAY BACK TO SCHOOL AND ENCOURAGES PARENTS TO VOLUNTEER TIME TO HELP STUDENTS

Washington, (D.C.) - On Monday, At-Large D.C. Councilmember Kwame R. Brown went with his wife and two children to their first day back to school at Langdon Elementary School, a District of Columbia Public School. Both children are now in their second year at Langdon. His daughter is enrolled in second grade and his son in pre-kindergarten 4.

Councilmember Brown is advocating for more parental participation in the school system, while also challenging the schools to increase Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) scores and decrease truancy rates. Last Friday, Councilmember Brown introduced the Parental Engagement Pledge, standing with other DC parents and Councilmembers. Copies of the pledge can be obtained by calling the Councilmember's office at 202-724-8174.

Parents and caregivers who sign the pledge agree to:

- Volunteer a minimum of 10 hours of their time to public schools during the school year.
- Build a culture of parental engagement by compelling a minimum of five parents to sign the engagement pledge.

"As a parent, I understand the need to be directly involved in your child's education. By volunteering for our schools, we can create a better environment for them to learn in. We're also reinforcing a strong support system for our children that encourages them to be excellent students and become active members of our community," said Councilmember Brown.

"I'm encouraged by the improved condition of the school and thankful for the volunteers who participated in Beautification Day," said Councilmember Brown regarding his inspection of the school this morning. "The walls were freshly painted and the principal, Mrs. Campbell, was on top of organizing the new students and late registrants. We're off to a good start."

DUPONT CIRCLE MAIN STREET VISITED BY COUNCILMEMBER BROWN

Washington, (D.C.) – This past Wednesday, Councilmember Kwame R. Brown continued his tour of DC Main Streets by visiting Historic Dupont Circle Main Streets (HDCMS). He was joined by HDCMS President James A. McGlade, Executive Director Morgan Zehner, and ANC Commissioner Mike Silverstein, SMD 2B06.

“I am a big supporter of the Main Streets,” said Councilmember Brown. “I’ve made a commitment to walk every business district in the city because local small businesses drive our economy. They hire local people to do local work. In turn, businesses located in the city need a government that is open and responsive to their needs. That’s why I’m out listening to their thoughts and ideas on how to improve our city’s economic infrastructure.”

This year Councilmember Brown has allocated Neighborhood Investment Fund (NIF) dollars for the new Main Streets programs in Wards 4, 7 & 8 that will be available October 1st. He has allocated $266,667 for each of the new Main Street programs for a total of $800,000 next year, which is an expansion of funding from previous years for other Main Streets programs. Local residents and businesses will be able to apply for the funds to create new DC Main Streets organizations in the three
new NIF areas.

He also added $725,000 to the Business Improvement District Litter Cleanup Assistance Fund with DC Main Streets in mind, to give them the ability to apply for up to $125,000 annually to clean the streets. Each Main Street will be able to apply for up to $125,000 to beautify their neighborhoods.

The Small Business Commercial Property Tax Relief Act of 2007, which was supported by Councilmember Brown, reserves $11 million in local funds for commercial property tax relief for small businesses.

“This is a tight knit community where residents and small businesses work together and Councilman Brown clearly saw the opportunity to join in an important effort to help the businesses survive,” said ANC Commissioner Mike Silverstein. “We enthusiastically welcome his efforts to move forward the valet program. This is critical to business survival now and will be a positive amenity once the streetscape is finished.”

“I appreciate the input of community members and businesses participating in the program and I look forward to touring more DC Main Streets,” said Councilmember Brown.

Tours are confirmed for the following neighborhoods:
Tuesday, September 11 – (4:00pm) Historic Brookland Main Street
- Corner of 12th Street and Monroe Street, NE

Upcoming Tours - Dates to be announced:

STATEMENT FROM JAMES A. MCGLADE,
PRESIDENT OF HISTORIC DUPONT CIRCLE MAIN STREETS,
REGARDING COUNCIL MEMBER KWAMI R. BROWN’S
TOUR OF DUPONT CIRCLE

August 29, 2007
Wednesday

It is a first in 25 years, observed an Historic Dupont Circle Main Streets (HDCMS) boardmember and long-time resident of Dupont Circle, that a D.C. council member-at-large has taken a walking tour of the District’s Main Streets, along with residents and business owners, with a keen eye on economic revitalization.

Councilmember Kwame R. Brown’s visit to HDCMS is noteworthy in many respects:
locals expressed their concerns with regard to the continued funding of HDCMS projects including issues dealing with homelessness and rodent abatement;
residents voiced concerns with regard to unwanted large box retailers marring the face of an historic community; and P Street business owners received assurance that emergency financial relief is forthcoming sooner than later.

James A. McGlade, president of HDCMS, on behalf of the board of directors and members, expressed appreciation for the Mr. Brown’s time and candid comments throughout his visit.

“We have noticed your efforts to ensure the continued economic success of Dupont Circle, especially with regard to small business. We look forward to your sustained interest in our community in the fiscal years 2008 and 2009 as chair of the District’s committee on economic development. It is gratifying for us to hear that after your tour today, you will directly go to Mr. Evans, chair of the committee on finance and revenue, with regard to the plight on P Street. We appreciate your immediate response to mobilize city resources to our aid.”
