SUDAN DIVESTMENT ACT SIGNED THIS WEEK: BROWN COMMENDS MAYOR FOR SWIFT ACTION
(Left: Councilmember Brown with William who is originally from Sudan and now interns for the Genocide Intervention Network) On Thursday, At-Large Councilmember Kwame R. Brown joined the Mayor and fellow Councilmembers for the signing of the Prohibition of Investment of Public Funds in Financial Institutions and Companies Making Loans to or Doing Business with the Government of Sudan Act of 2007 (B17-134), which will help in the international fight to stop genocide in Sudan. Brown is both the author of the Sense of the Council Sudan Divestment Resolution of 2007 (PR17-134) and a co-sponsor of the divestment Act, which was co-introduced by Councilmembers Barry, Schwartz and Thomas. By allowing investors to scrutinize the role that these companies play in perpetuating the genocide in Sudan, companies are forced to change their behavior, and if they choose to ignore stockholder demands, the investors can divest from that company, said Brown. Im proud we were able to come together as a city to make this a reality and that the Mayor is signing the bill into law. The devastating impact of genocide compels us to take swift action, to not only stop genocide while its taking place, but to prevent it from happening ever again. We must continue to fight for human rights and make a commitment to helping people in need around the world. This is an important step toward achieving those goals. "Just yesterday a high-level UN official predicted that a planned international peacekeeping mission for Darfur would not be effective due to the Government of Sudan's rampant obstructionism. With the stroke of his pen Mayor Fenty will help tighten the squeeze on the genocidal government in Khartoum and may perhaps hasten the day when civilians in Darfur can live without fear of rape and murder. Today, DC residents can be proud of their council and mayor for taking an important step to fight genocide. Many organizations and local leaders have supported this effort including STAND, Save Darfur Coalition, the NAACP, American Jewish World Services and the American Jewish Committee, said Adam Sterling, Director of the Sudan Divestment Task Force, a project of the Genocide Intervention Network. _____________________________________________________
HOPE YOU HAD A WONDERFUL THANKSGIVING!
(Councilmember Brown & Family pictured from left to right: Councilmember Brown with son, Kwame, II, daughter Lauren & wife Marcia) Thanksgiving is one of my favorite holidays. It's a wonderful time to gather with family and friends to partake in a grand feast! I hope that you and your family took advantage of our unusually warm weather to sit on the porch and chat, or toss a ball in the yard. Hopefully, you had an opportunity to come out to the Turkey Bowl, to cheer on our DCIAA high school football teams, H.D. Woodson and Dunbar Senior High School. Most importantly, it is times like these when we can share what we have with others that are less fortunate. I spent time with some of our young adults that were not able to join their families this holiday season. In the spirit of togetherness this holiday season, I encourage you to give of your time and talents to brighten another person's day. I truly applaud the outstanding leaders, volunteers and everyday heroes that give unselfishly throughout the year. It is because of your efforts that we have communities that continue to support and uplift our families. From my family to yours, we hope that you continue to enjoy this time of togetherness and the opportunity to give to another. With Many Thanks & Blessings, Kwame Brown _____________________________________________________ VOTE FOR AN HGTV MAKEOVER OF ANACOSTIA, DC: YOUR VOTE COUNTS! Its decaying downtown, which is beginning to be revitalized with construction of some office buildings, is located at the intersection of Good Hope Road and Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue. It is the most famous neighborhood in the Southeast quadrant of Washington, located east of the Anacostia River, and one of the Districts Main Street communities. While the Anacostia neighborhood is in dire need of extensive rehabilitation, this community revitalization effort would help clean up and maintain Anacostia Park and River, repair elderly housing in the neighborhood and improve a community education center that serves at risk children.
