BULLSEYE! BROWN WELCOMES TARGET TO THE DISTRICT
Last week, Brown joined Columbia Heights neighbors, Ward 1 Councilmember Jim Graham and Mayor Adrian Fenty to open the doors of the first Target in the District of Columbia. Brown hopes that the grand opening of the DC USA complex will spur further neighborhood development that welcomes both retail while preserving local establishments. I thank the residents for patiently dealing with the construction and traffic congestion during this process, said Brown. The opportunity to provide convenient, affordable shopping options within walking distance is the greatest reward. Its been years in the making and I am excited to see our residents take full advantage of what is now ours.
Brown toured the new store which includes a Starbucks café and underground parking. Ready to shop, Councilmember Brown purchased a Nintendo Wii gaming console for his children. DC USA will enhance the shopping and entertainment opportunities currently available in the District. DC USA is a pedestrian-oriented retail destination where most of the stores will be entered directly from the street. BROWN REQUESTS PLAN TO MODERNIZE UDC
On Tuesday, March 4 at the Councils 22nd legislative meeting, At-large Councilmember Kwame Brown introduced legislation to identify the facilities modernization needs for the University of the District of Columbia. The University of the District of Columbia Campus Plan for Facilities Modernization Act of 2008, would require UDC to develop a campus plan for the purposes of modernizing all of the facilities on its campus; construct a separate facility for the University of the District of Columbia, David A. Clarke School of Law and submit the campus plan to the Council within 120 days. As we direct fund to rebuild our public school facilities, I believe we should also identify funds to modernize our public university, said Brown. From pre-k to post graduate studies, all of our students should be provided with the optimal learning experience. Brown hopes to modernize the University of the District of Columbia to motivate its current student body, attract new students and recognize individuals that contribute to its success. During fall 2007, Councilmember Brown introduced legislation to form a committee to name University of the District of Columbia (UDC) campus buildings after UDC graduates that have made significant contributions in their profession or on humanity, locally, nationally, or internationally. The University of the District of Columbia Building Name Designation Act of 2007 requires the Mayor to assemble a committee for the purpose of nominating UDC graduates for recognition by name on all campus buildings.
BROWN RECOGNIZES THE CONTRIBUTIONS OF BLACK VETRANS; PAST AND PRESENT
On February 28, At-Large Councilmember Kwame R. Brown, Chair of the Committee on Economic Development, joined the Veteran Affairs Medical Center staff, in celebrating the contributions of Black Veterans, past and present. The Councilmember will focus on the Veterans of Washington, DC, and their families. Councilmember-At-Large Kwame R. Brown will also recognize the staff of the Veteran Affairs Medical Center for their continuing service to all veterans. In celebrating Black History Month, we cannot, nor should not minimize the contributions of the men and women who have served our country with valor and distinction. As far back as the American Revolution and the heroic acts of Crispus Attucks, to the Buffalo Soldiers, Tuskegee Airmen and Dorie Miller, recipient of the Congressional Medal of Honor, our history of service to this country is well documented. However, I am also happy to be here today to also recognize with pride the contributions of District of Columbia veterans who have served in Vietnam, Persian Gulf, Afghanistan and Iraq. These are our current history makers. At-Large Councilmember Kwame R. Brown also took this occasion to acknowledge the families of veterans for their courage and support, and the DC National Guard #275th Transportation Unit, the DC Chapter #958, Vietnam Veterans of American, and the DC Office of Veterans Affairs. With pride they have served and with gratitude we offer our thanks. DISTRICT HOSTS 2008 CITYWIDE JOB FAIR TODAY
