UPCOMING COMMUNITY MEETINGS AND EVENTS

GREEN DC DAY: APRIL 23, 2008

Event Postponement Benefits Senior Citizen Lunch Programs

The postponement of Green DC Day activities sponsored by the “Green Builders Council of DC, originally scheduled for Monday, April 21 on Freedom Plaza, benefited two Senior Citizen feeding programs.

Recognizing that inclement weather forced the cancellation and Balducci Restaurant lunches prepared for the occasion, Councilmember Brown worked with the Green Builders Council of DC (a district non-profit organization sponsoring the event) to arrange for 100 lunches to be delivered to Colony House Senior Citizen building and the Kennedy Street Senior Citizen Program.

While seizing upon the opportunity to be of service, Councilmember Brown stated “What started out as a damper for the event, turned out to add sunshine to our seniors”.

In celebration of Earth Day, DDOE will host Green DC Day on Wednesday, April 23 on Freedom Plaza in Northwest Washington, DC. Green DC Day is designed to promote green living and a healthy environment. Green DC Day kicks off a full week of Earth Day events taking place across the city. Please join us between 10 am and 4 pm to celebrate the District's going green efforts.

Nearly 100 District agencies, organizations and businesses will participate to educate residents about the importance of preserving our environment and using energy wisely. Exhibitors include Home Depot, DC Greenworks, DC Department of Public Works, the Environmental Protection Agency, US Green Building Council, Rainforest Bus, Segway and Zipcar to name a few.

Exciting green events will take place throughout the day such as a "Green Fashion Show" and a 10:30 am "Going Green Press Conference" which city officials have been invited to give remarks on the environmental progress in the District.

"Time to Shine...April is Student Testing Time!" Brown Gives Pep Talk to Davis Elementary Students

With just two school days remaining before the "big-test" Councilmember Brown visited 10 classrooms to give a pep talk to students preparing for the annual assessment test.

Each April, DCPS students in grades 3-8 and 10 take the District of Columbia Comprehensive Assessment System (DC-CAS). The DC-CAS is the "big-test" that measures students' knowledge and skills in math, reading, science and writing. The DC-CAS helps guide instruction by identifying the areas in which students need additional support and challenges. It is also critical in determining DCPS' compliance with No Child Left Behind.

The academic performance of our students is far below what it needs to be. In addition, a number of our older students fail to show up to take the test. This year's mantra is "Time to Shine...April is Student Testing Time!" In following Chancellor Rhee's efforts to help our students achieve at the highest levels, Councilmember Brown visited Davis Elementary to provide students with a large dose of encouragement as they prepared during the final days before the DC-CAS.

Brown promised to reward all students he visited with a special celebration to recognize their efforts.
