BROWN JOINS YOUTH LEADERS TO KICK OFF THE 2008 MAYOR'S YOUTH LEADERSHIP INSTITUTE

On Monday, June 16, Councilmember Brown joined youth leaders to celebrate the 2008 Mayor's Youth Leadership Institute Summer Program.
Brown, a MYLI graduate, saluted the programs newest members at their first assembly and welcomed them to a summer filled with both professional and career development.

At every assembly, MYLI participants end their meeting with a declaration, which Brown joined them in reciting this year:

MYLI DECLARATION

HELLO WINNERS! Standing in this room, are the greatest, most committed, most responsible group of people, this world has ever known!

If it is to be; It is up to me

Yes I can; Yes I will;

Yes we can; Yes we will

I AM--I AM

WE ARE--WE ARE

The greatest! The greatest! THE GREATEST!

About the Mayor's Youth Leadership Institute:

The Mayor's Youth Leadership Institute (MYLI) was founded in 1979 as a year-round program to train District of Columbia youth in the concepts of leadership and self-development. The MYLI training model emphasizes practical, hands-on experience and a holistic approach to developing leaders for the 21st century. Each year, 250 young people participate in the year-round program and 500 youth participate in the Summer Training Program. Thousands of DC youth have received leadership training to date.

Members of the Institute come from a wide cross-section of ethnic, cultural, and economic backgrounds, reflective of the general population of the city. Leadership development training begins for members of the Institute at age 14, and generally concludes at age 17, when they are ready for college or other post-secondary opportunities. The Institute is strongly supported by its Alumni Association, an auxiliary group which meets regularly to generate support for the Institute.

Youth leaders are active in a variety of programs and special projects that allow them to demonstrate their acquired skills. These activities include:

MYLI Youth Government - a replication of the District government
Overnight residential training on local college campuses and local camp sites
Serving as hosts to youth visiting the Nations Capital from cities across the US and from countries around the world.
Developing and publishing a MYLI newsletter
Hosting an annual public speaking competition for youth
Hosting an annual Community Awards Banquet
Performing community service work
Sponsoring issues forums with local government officials and prominent industry professionals

BROWN WELCOMES INTERNS FOR THE DC SPORTS AND ENTERTAINMENT COMMISSION'S INAUGURAL ARCHICTECTURE, CONSTRUCTION AND ENGINEERING ACADEMY

The District of Columbia Sports and Entertainment Commission (DCSEC), in partnership with the Department of Employment Services (DOES) and the Washington Development Industry Council (WDIC), has developed an academy for 25-50 promising youth to expose them to career pathways in fields of architecture, construction and engineering(ACE) and to demonstrate the significance of the building industry to the future District of Columbia workforce.

At last week's pre- orientation, Councilmember Brown welcomed the interns, declaring the new academy as a pathway for new career training opportunities. "As I look around this room filled with high school graduates and rising seniors, I am excited about the opportunities that await them," said Brown. "This academy serves as a building block for those who otherwise would not have the opportunity to receive vocational training or career development. During this summer program, students will gain a rewarding experience that will assist them in developing a healthy appreciation for the career fields in the construction industry. As we look forward to the opening of the Phelps Architecture, Construction and Engineering Academy this Fall, it is my hope that not only prospective students will look to the school as a method to explore this industry while completing their educational requirements but also a pathway to developing a skill that will add to their futures."

During a ten week internship, rising DCPS seniors and recent high school graduates (ages 17-21) are sponsored and employed by leading ACE employers in the Washington, DC metropolitan area. Interns in the academy will also participate in activities including stimulating enrichment sessions, ongoing mentoring and coaching sessions and a recognition celebration.

TEACHING THE KEYS TO SUCESS: DC TEEN CHOIR GIRLS MEET ALICIA KEYS

On June 13, At-Large Councilmember Kwame R. Brown escorted 10 aspiring young female vocalists to meet one of their idols, nine-time Grammy Award winner Alicia Keys before her performance at the Verizon Center.

In celebration of black music month, Brown sought to grant the wishes of a few young women, who desire to build a musical career and draw from the various genres. Brown hopes that the young ladies will be further inspired to continue to pursue their passions after meeting Ms. Keys.

Last fall, Councilmember Brown surprised 75 teen girls with an appearance by Beyoncé Knowles during his Defining Our Own Destiny forum designed to inspire them to make life choices that will change their futures and influence their peers to take a more active role in their families and their communities.

This year, the teen girls selected are members of the Children of the Gospel Choir, a program of the Washington Performance Art’s Society based in Washington, DC. The group met before the D.C. Council as two young performers testified this past May in support of funding for their Choir. Verica Williams, age 13, testified before the City Council and spoke of her love of music and performing and how it has made her aspire to be the best she can be in school and music. The young ladies are excited to meet Alicia Keys, a young musical icon, who began writing songs during her early teenage years, making her first professional recording at age 16 and released her first album at age 20.
