LISTENING LEADER LAZER LESSONS

THE POWER OF RESPONDING

Jennifer Walchok sent the following application to us this week that shows the power of responding in the SIER listening process.

I was faced with a situation this week, which required me to really use SIER. I was in a second interview for a paralegal position that I really wanted and the hiring attorney began to read to me my results from a personality test constructed by a career psychologist.

He began first to read bad qualities, such as I might be too controlling and I would not make a good assistant and so on. He awaited a reaction from me. I took advantage of the Golden pause and waited as he began to speak again. I began to practice sensing, interpreting and evaluating where he was going with what he was saying. I responded to him, by asking “aren’t those qualities that would make a great litigation paralegal?” He seemed to be impressed and then read to me some more things I took as negative, but since I am progressing in my listening and communication skills I paused and did not interrupt to defend myself. I was certainly glad that I didn’t because he then told me he read all of those to me in order to see how I would react and offered me the job.

I really found it to be interesting because so many of the leaders you have in your book continue to speak about how really listening and being focused on what the person is saying instead of jumping in with reactions will bring success. I didn’t react and I waited for an opportunity to speak and really took my time to evaluate what was being said and he took that as a great reaction, when all I really did was listen.

After being offered the job he told me all of the positives and also told me he saw me as someone with the potential to move into an executive role running the firm if I was willing to put in the work over time. It was amazing! All I did was listen to this very intelligent and successful man tell me what he saw for me. The old me could have totally ruined this interview because I would have interrupted and I would have not listened to the purpose for what he was saying and I would have been focused on the negatives and defending myself before he had an opportunity to tell me the positive.

LISTENING LEADER LAZER LESSON: Jennifer shows us that consciously using SIER in life's situations creates Success In Each Relationship.
