LISTENING LEADER LAZER LESSONS
WISDOMS WAYS 5 THINGS TO SEEK
Frances Hesselbein is the Chairman of the Board of Governors of the Leader to Leader Institute and is the former Executive Director of the Girl Scouts. She has 17 honorary degrees and received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1998. Dr. Peter Drucker, the father of Modern Management, called her the finest executive hes ever known.
In an interview for the Listening Leaders2007 book, Frances was asked - who has served you as a listening leader role model over the course of your lifetime? Her response:
The person who has had the greatest impact upon my life and upon my career was my grandmother. From my first consciousness of relationships with other people she has been my listening role model. She listened very carefully. Even when I was a little child at age 5 or 6, she looked into my eyes and she listened as though this was the most important thing that she could be doing at that moment and she didnt cut me off. I finished my little story, whatever it was. She taught me how to listen through her own behavior. She listened and so I learned to listen because I wanted to be like her and that kind of thoughtfulness and appreciation was a very important lesson learned very early. All through my life I often go back and think about something she has said
when she was a little girl, her family had a lumber mill in the mountains of western Pennsylvania. There was a little one room schoolhouse in her town and she went to this little schoolhouse that her father and grandfather and all or her ancestors had attended.
There was a permanent statement on the blackboard that she made me memorize: If wisdoms ways you will wisely seek these five things: observe with care of whom you speak, to whom you speak, how, when, and where. Frances stated, I memorized that statement and as I look back at my life, the only time Ive ever gotten into trouble was when I forgot that.
