LISTENING LEADER LAZER LESSONS
I REPORT TO HER BLACKBERRY
C. Rodriguez sent the following situation to us.
As Director of Human Resources, I report directly to the President of our firm. Actually, I report to her Blackberry. Due to her limited schedule, we see her for only nine hours a week. When she is in the office, she is bombarded with questions that need detailed input from the four employees that directly report to her.
During one of our monthly meetings, she complained that people were always sticking their head in her office door to ask questions. She considers those to be interruptions. She stated that she only wants to be contacted by email. I feel like I am unimportant and a nuisance for asking a question.
There are many things that I simply need her input on. I became angry and vented to my husband about the situation. My job performance is declining and I am quickly losing interest in my job. If she would only listen!
LISTENING LEADER LAZER LESSON: One of the greatest costs of not listening is loss of talented people.
FROM LAST WEEKS LISTENING STORY: Subscriber Heidemarie Nyhuis commented on last weeks story - I just finished reading Jennifer Walchoks The Power of Responding piece about using the SIER method of listening. What a wonderful example of using this method on a daily basis. I have to admit even though I consider myself a very good listener, I may not have responded quite as appropriately as she did during the interview. Having these updates from you allows me to reaffirm the importance of listening in my daily life as well as such important events as an interview process. My thanks to you as well as the young lady that described her experience. Have a wonderful day.
Thank you,Heidemarie. One of the best ways to learn is through stories. We are seeking illustrations of both positive and negative listening situations. Send your stories to Rick Bommelje - RKB@ListeningLeaders.com
