LISTENING LEADER LAZER LESSONS

USE LISTENING STRUCTURE WITH TECHNOLOGY FOR A WINNING COMBINATION

During the past two weeks, we have shared information on the pro’s and con’s of using email and Blackberry as it relates to listening. Following is a strategy that Dr. Harvey Barnett is using with his team members:

“My team members know how to best get information to me in a structured and usable format. I have accepted the fact that as a leader I am limited, because I do not have enough time to listen to everyone and everything that should be listened to. Thus, I depend on other people I have trained. In addition, I have compensated for my impatience in listening by surrounding myself with excellent listeners who extend my listening, and who can translate information to me in a structured way that is best for me.

I absolutely must set up a structure for those who are listening and reporting on my behalf, because my time is so limited. I would extend the same advice to other listening leaders. When you establish a clear-cut listening structure and format, you will listen much more effectively. I have always said, ‘You don’t have to pay me to sit down and listen, but you do have to present information in a structured format that will heighten my willingness to take the time to truly give you the attention your particular problem or circumstance deserves. Simply put, I could not survive without structured formats.”

LISTENING LEADER LAZER LESSON: Innovate by creating your own effective listening structures.

READER RESPONSE FROM THE ‘I REPORT TO HER BLACBERRY LISTENING STORY:

Listening Leader Reader K.H.shared 'FYI: for another perspective, I have a semi-technical role for which I do not have a technical background. I value that my manager is willing to take any question via email. He has a huge breadth of responsibility and his time during the day is limited. I know he will respond by the end of the day (whatever time that is). For me, this has been a very effective process that keeps me being as productive as possible.'

Listening Leader Reader Sharon Walker shared her insights: I feel for C. Rodriguez- I too had that Boss that I only communicated with electronically and I only saw him about 4 hours a Month! I made the major decision that there had to be a better life and less stress. Work and communication involves all levels of any organization that understand the total importance of all types of communication- especially listening to your vital leaders. I am so happy to report that my current employer and immediate District Manager in the organization takes the time to listen when I speak! My life is so much fuller and easier to accomplish my goals and help the organization grow. I wish I could "listen" and help C. Rodriguez!

One of the best ways to learn is through stories. We are seeking stories that illustrate both positive and negative listening situations. Send your stories to Rick Bommelje - RKB@ListeningLeaders.com
