LISTENING LEADERS LEAVE A LEGACY OF LOYALTY
Listening Leaders® labor to live a life and leave a legacy of loyalty. The simple fact remains, everyone values and appreciates the important and constant actions of loyalty. Today the demands for loyalty are numerous and the listening challenges of leaders remain unending. Thus, a basic question arises: To whom and to what are you loyal?
Golden Circle Listening Leaders understand that loyalty is a virtue that lies at the heart of all true friendship and productive teamwork. As such, earned loyalty demands a commitment to listen with a truly open and non-judgmental mind. At the same time, building the ultimate legacy of being a loyal listener does not require blind loyalty or simple-minded agreement with those whom we choose to listen to. Rather it calls for every listening leader to develop a Listeners Oath they can be true to. For as Athenaeus simply noted, Goodness does not consist in greatness, but greatness in goodness.
By following a specific listening path, a lasting legacy of listening loyalty can be established. It can begin as follows: I promise to commit myself everyday and in every way to the following listening actions.
First, I will identify specific values to which I will commit my life-long loyalty.
Second, I will identify specific individuals to whom I will commit my life-long loyalty.
Third, I will identify specific organizations to which I will commit my life-long loyalty.
Fourth, I will practice caring and open-minded listening in my loyalty building quest. I will be loyal and thoughtful in the process of building long-term trust. My listening loyalty will be earned.
Fifth, I will be available whenever needed. You can count on me in both good and bad times. I will listen to your successes and your travails.
Sixth, I will earn your confidence by keeping your secrets.
Finally, like Boy Scouts everywhere, I will be prepared. I will study the art and science of listening, and commit to working hard at becoming a better listener everyday. I will build a legacy by becoming a loyal listener.
In the process of shaping your own listening legacy with a loyalty oath, it is imperative to remember the simple, but critical, truth of A. P. Gouthey, who wrote, Loyalty is the one thing a leader cannot do without.
Listening Leaders® establish a listening loyalty oath.
Listening Leaders® will be reminded that true loyalty is limited, yet crucial, in Rudyard Kiplings poem The Thousandth Man.
One man in a thousand, Solomon says, Will stick more close than a brother. And its worthwhile seeking him half your days If you find him before the other. Nine hundred and ninety-nine depend On what the world sees in you, But the Thousandth Man will stand by your friend With the whole round world agin you.
Tis neither promise nor prayer nor show Will settle the finding for ee. Nine hundred and ninety-nine of em go By your looks, or your acts, or your glory, But if he finds you and you find him, The rest of the world dont matter; For the Thousandth Man will sink or swim With you in any water.
You can use his purse with no more talk Than he uses yours for his spendings, And laugh and meet in your daily walk As though there had been no lendings. Nine hundred and ninety-nine of em call, For silver and gold in their dealings; But the Thousandth Man hes worth them all, Because you can show him your feelings.
His wrongs your wrong, and his rights your right, In season or out of season. Stand up and back it in all mens sight─ With That for your only reason! Nine hundred and ninety-nine cant bide The Shame or mocking or laughter,
But the Thousandth Man will stand by your side To the gallows-foot-and after!
