LISTENING LEADER LAZER LESSONS
SHOWING APPRECIATION BY LISTENING
As fundamental as it might seem, the best thing that leaders can do to show others they respect them and consider them worthwhile is to reach out; listen and learn. Professors Suresh Srivasta and Frank Barrett of Case Western Reserve University underscore this point in their writings on executive integrity by noting that it is "not the content of the exchange that is central but the experience of being taken in and heard, which not only confirms the legitimacy of one's looking at the world but then allows one to begin letting go of some defensiveness because the experience of affirmation increases one's capacity to affirm others." So as leaders we must not simply articulate our philosophies. We must listen to others. We must learn from them. Unfortunately, research by the Hay Group, covering one million employees in over two thousand organizations, reveals that only about one in three people respond favorably to questions about how well their company listens to them.
