LISTENING LEADER LAZER LESSONS
LISTENING DANGEROUSLY
The following excerpt is from Mark Brady in his excellent book, The Wisdom of Listening.
Integral to the skill of listening with our hearts open is the inevitable requirements to respond in some way that deeply honors those things which you have been entrusted. And as we find ways to truly honor those truths in others, we are inevitably led to the other dangerous dimension of skillful listening: learning to listen deeply and authentically to our own tender heart.
In the mid 1980's, Patricia Hopkins and Sherry Ruth Anderson spent eighteen months traveling around the country interviewing a hundred women of spiritual accomplishment, women like Jungian analyst Marion Woodman, activist Joanna Macy, and psychiatrist Jean Shinoda Bolen. Out of the research they discovered a common thread running through each woman's journey: they were all virtuoso listeners - to self and others. With respect to themselves, they each asked two intrusive questions in one form or another. The two questions these women asked over and over were: "What's true for me?" and "What do I want?" And then they waited, sometimes fearfully, sometimes with excitement, but prepared somehow to honor whatever quivering answers they received. We too must be prepared to ask such questions and to patiently wait for the answers.
