LISTENING LEADER LAZER LESSONS

TO WHOM OR WHAT ARE YOU LISTENING THESE DAYS?

You have probably noticed major polarizations in our government, social groups, even religions. Some comments are embarrassing; some are appalling. Even when the information is correct, people use it to beat up on others. I’m not naming names. But I am naming fear and hatred. The first, I believe, leads to the second.

That takes us back to the opening question: To whom or what are you listening? Most of us probably listen to and read those who agree with us. No wonder fear and hatred are so visible! I’m reminded of the 1960s — a time we don’t need to repeat. We have allowed ourselves to become so polarized we can hardly talk together, and talking together must be a first step.

What would happen if we listened to people with whom we disagree? Not just in the media, but face to face. Some fear would probably be involved — but a fear that could be confronted. Fear possesses much power because we do not confront it.

What do we fear when we disagree with someone? They might be right? That might be good to know. The reality is there can be more than one opinion, and none has a corner on correctness. Often, they all have kernels of truth that would benefit us all.

Do you consider the method to use to connect with people. Do you weigh whether or not the message would best be served by a text instead of a phone call, a tweet instead of a text, etc. The various methods of connectivity have their pluses and minuses, and it’s up to you to determine:

That truth will remain elusive until we learn to honestly, reverently listen to each other, until we go to the trouble of finding unbiased facts, until we care for more people than those who are just like us.
