I hope this finds you warm and comfortable, enjoying the holiday season. It is easy to get very rushed and stressed and it is a great time to do some really nice things for yourself at year-end, just to maintain balance!  Here is a list of things I would suggest:

  • Get a good haircut. Male or female, being freshly groomed can do wonders for your outlook! And if you have family gatherings, holiday parties, etc., you will feel more confident and look good in front of the boss (or Mom)!

  • Buy ready-made.  During the holidays there can be a lot of pressure to be the best cook, the best decorator, the most organized and so on. There are plenty of great quality ready-made foods, decorations, hot drink mixes, gift baskets, etc. Don't knock yourself out unnecessarily.

  • If you have a home mortgage, make sure you get your January payment in by Dec. 31 so that you can deduct that month's worth of interest on your next tax return.

  • If you are one to make New Year's resolutions, try this new approach. Instead of making a list of tasks, make a "Who I Will Be" list. For example, instead of "I will lose 20 pounds," say "I will be a healthy and fit person." Or instead of "I will find a new job I like better and quit this one!" try "I will be a person who works at something that I find satisfying and fulfilling." Once you decide who you will be, the tasks will take care of themselves.

  • Be the person who sees the unseen people. They are around you, everywhere. It may be the homeless person you pass every day. It might the custodian at your building who only works after hours. If you do nothing more than look them in the eye and say hello to acknowledge them, make someone who doesn't ordinarily get a lot of attention feel like they matter to you. You do it for them, but a side benefit is that it will make you feel great.

  • See a really great movie with someone you enjoy being with. Two hours of sitting still and escaping can do wonders!

  • Make a list of everything for which you are thankful at this present moment. Nothing will pick you up like realizing how much you already have.  Save the list and pull it out next year at this time when you write another one and see how much more you have then, or what you have lost that you don't miss.

  • Do something really nice for someone who is suffering. I received an e-mail message regarding a woman at my church who was just diagnosed with aggressive throat cancer and she has traveled to another state to have surgery. Her brother set up a "prayer pager" for her. Any friend can call the number and at the beep, key in their zip code. When she hears it, she will know that someone is praying for her at that very moment and can look up the zip code to see where it's coming from. It doesn't disturb her, but will let her know people care for her at any time of day. What neat thing can you think of to do for someone who is facing a hard situation?

These are just a few ideas. Come up with your own to ensure that you spend the last few weeks of 2005 on a positive note. After all, it's the only 2005 you will ever have!

Warmest Regards,

Gwen
