How to Regain Your Edge When You Feel
Like You've Already Done it All!
Do not look for approval except for the consciousness
of doing your best.
-Andrew Carnegie
People who don't take risks generally make about two
big mistakes a year. People who do take risks generally make about two big
mistakes a year.
-Peter F. Drucker
-------------------------
I see it everywhere. Friends, clients, family members
who are in a "mid-career crisis" of sorts. Either they feel stuck in a
career that feels nowhere, or they want to start a brand new one but it's
too scary. And at the top of the list: People have left a successful
career behind to start a brand new one and it hasn't turned out exactly as
planned.
Sound familiar? Blame it on 9/11, overabundance, under
abundance, war, or any number of things that have caused us to focus on
finding meaning in our lives versus just earning a living or getting
through it until we can retire. You want to do something fulfilling that
you love and get paid very well for doing it, but that simply hasn't
happened. Yet.
If you find yourself in this "crisis" you may not feel like
you have the "edge" you need. It's hard to embark on a new venture and
even harder to have already done that and feel like "now what?" How
do you get your groove back, if you'll pardon me for borrowing that term?
Here are some suggestions:
-
Imagery. Spend some quiet time picturing yourself as
a huge success. See what it looks like. Imagine how it feels. The more you
can picture it, the clearer it will become and the more likely it is to
manifest itself in your life.
-
MOST IMPORTANT: Surround yourself with people
who inspire you. Spend time with friends who know how brilliant you are
and tell you so. No, that isn't selfish. All successful people need
reassurance and ego-boosting and there is nothing wrong with that. Avoid
anyone who leaves you feeling low!
-
Surround yourself with things that inspire you.
Books, elegant surroundings, certain colors (I recently read that a sky
blue ceiling actually caused higher intelligence test scores in a
controlled study), nature, light, etc. Make your environment support your
creativity and energy.
-
If your confidence centers around a particular skill or
lack thereof, learn it! Take a class, practice, get a tutor. Examples:
computer proficiency, sales techniques, writing. Stimulate your brain!
-
Tend to your self-care. Look at your spiritual,
physical, mental and emotional needs. Are all being met? Neglect only one
and all others suffer. Great way to check in on this: Hire a coach!
(Hint, hint.) And if there is something troubling from your past that
repeatedly holds you back, seek the help of a qualified therapist. An
objective observer can nearly always help gain fresh perspective!
-
Don't forget to have fun! Some of the most
stimulating and creative ideas happen when you're relaxed and having fun.
It's imperative!
-
Begin investigating any and all options open to you.
What can you do with your experience and education? There are literally
hundreds of options for nearly anyone. An idea: As you go about your
business every day, look at everyone you meet and what they are doing.
Think to yourself, "I could do that." Then imagine what that would be
like. It may take a while, but you'll begin getting some serious
inspiration.
This is such a big topic to cover that I intend to devote
the next few issues to it. Next month: The Power of Intention. (I've been
taking a course on this myself and am very excited about coaching clients
on this subject!)
Warmest Regards,
Gwen
