"You gain strength, courage, and confidence by every experience in which you really stop to look fear in the face. You are able to say to yourself, "I have lived through this horror. How to Face it and Get it Done!

Over a year ago, my family moved into a new house (at least new to us). As with any new home, there were many changes to be made in order to make it our own. One of the most obvious was to paint over the sick color of yellow (I'm not kidding; the name of the color is "Seaweed") that the previous owners had throughout. It is a color that I so detest, I find myself avoiding that part of the house. So why am I just getting around to doing that now, over a year later?

To begin with, it was in four large rooms and on the ceilings of three of those, as well as in the two-story entryway going all the way up the stairs and down the upstairs hallway. I have always done my own painting because it is something easy to do and is immediately gratifying. But in this case I was overwhelmed by the enormity of the job and by choosing colors. But now a painter has been hired and the job should be completed next week, thanks to my good friend and brilliant designer Betsy, who helped me over the biggest hurdle of choosing the colors and deciding where to put them.

What are you putting off right now that if you completed would make you feel so much better? Usually putting something off is a result of fear. It may be fear of confrontation (if it involves someone else), fear of making the wrong choice, fear of looking bad, or fear of not being able to complete it.

How do you overcome the overwhelm? There are several steps, and all are relatively simple if you take them one at a time:

  • Identify the first step. In my case, it was to choose the colors. Break the project or task down into steps and then order them chronologically. Then complete one step at a time.

  • Get outside help where you need it. If you're overwhelmed by the enormity of what you need to do, get help. Hire it, outsource it, get advice, call a friend, etc. There are always other people who are better at doing certain things than you are. Why not solicit their expertise?

  • Give yourself a deadline for completion, then back it up to today so that you have a complete timeline. If necessary, get someone else involved in holding you accountable to meet that deadline.

  • Look at what the real barriers are for you. Ask yourself, "What is really keeping me from doing this?" The chances are that whatever the perceived reward has been for putting something off does not outweigh the reward of completing it.

And best of all, most of the time after you do confront the thing that you have put off, you will look back and find that it wasn't nearly as bad as you expected and you'll wonder why you just didn't go ahead and tackle it earlier!
