This
morning my 6 year old daughter was very upset about going to school. Today
was the day she was to have her make-up photos taken as she was absent the
morning that her class had theirs done. I could not figure out why she was
so worried and concerned about being alone when they took her
photograph. She kept asking over and over whether other children would be
there and what if she ended up being all by herself.
After
explaining the situation to her several times something shifted. I realized
that she thought she had missed taking the class picture with all of her
classmates together and that she thought she was going to be standing on a
stage posing for her class picture all alone. When I explained that she had
missed the solo portraits and not the class pictures she got a big grin on
her face. She said, Mommy, I was all worried for nothing. We both
breathed a sigh of relief and hugged each other. In the car on the way to
school she kept saying over and over, I didnt understand. Now I feel so
much better!
I
reminded Ania that even grownups do that to themselves sometimes. They get
so worked up over things they have either misunderstood or things that in
the end never happen. Eventually they realize that worrying is not only
unproductive, but optional as well.
How
much time do you spend worrying about things that never happen? How much
energy do you put into making up stories about people, things or experiences
that not only rob you of precious time but also usually prove themselves to
be false?
Imagine how enjoyable life could be if you were to give your Inner Worry
Wart a vacation. As my coach likes to say, Let her/him go make the bed
while you go off and have some fun. I like that idea.

Inner Outings: The Diarist's Deck of 33 Cards and Book of
Exploration (Paperback)
by Charlene Geiss, Claudia Jessup
Charlene Geisss collage style of journaling is not only fun
to do but draws from a variety of media. Newsweek has reported on the
therapeutic benefits of confessional writing, and writing and art together
are able to pull out a deeper range of complexity and personal expression
from the journal keeper than words alone. Geiss and veteran writer Claudia
Jessup created this set of 33 cards, each corresponding to a question that
prompts the journalers imagination. The Book of Exploration elaborates upon
each card and suggests writing and drawing techniques to plumb the depths of
the journalers experience toward rich self-exploration. Black-and-white
illustrations throughout add to this tool for creative journal keeping.. From Amazaon.com Book Details.
