Good Morning!
I just
finished eating some turkey bacon that, for some reason, I felt compelled to
buy at the grocery store the other day. Yuck! It was tasteless, rubbery and
a very poor imitation of the real stuff. For the life of me, I cannot
remember why I bought it.
It got
me thinking about a conversation I had the other day with a friend about a
wonderful recipe that she had for a butternut squash soup laden with butter.
We both agreed that the best things in life (including rich and decadent
foods) are worth having in moderation. We talked about how we could feel
completely satisfied and guilt free after consuming a small to moderate
amount of rich and fattening food. It didnt take huge portions to satisfy
our craving for good and fine things, and that somehow, it felt yummy to
indulge ourselves, especially knowing that we were doing it in moderation.
For me
it wasnt always this way. As a young professional woman in my 20s, I lived
on Diet Coke and lite and low fat foods while often binging wildly on
portions much too large for my good. Fast forward 20 years (yikes!) and I
have become much more in tune with my body, my intuition and my wisdom. I
have learned that just about anything in moderation is not only good for
your health, but good for your peace of mind as well.
Some
pleasures in life are just worth savoring rather than roping off as
off-limits or judging as unhealthy or bad for you--good chocolate, fine wine
and real bacon to name just a few.
Most
of us have experienced enough deprivation to know that keeping ourselves
from enjoying lifes decadent pleasures in the end, backfires on us. We are
left shamefully sneaking low-fat chocolate cookies in the closet instead of
celebrating out in the open with a Godiva chocolate (or two) topped with a
dose of freedom. When tasting self love and the freedom that comes with it,
one realizes that there is nothing in the world finer or more delicious.
I
apologize for the fact that most of my deliciously decadent examples above
are food based. I guess all those years in the restaurant business have left
their mark on me. That being said, I dont think that you have to try very
hard to come up with some other examples of things that you may have labeled
as naughty or bad for you that, in moderation, may be exactly what you
need. Reading People Magazine under a blanket in your recliner, doing
crossword puzzles in your pajamas or surfing the web by candlelight are a
couple of other examples that come to mind.
Where
are you holding yourself back from enjoying lifes pleasures? What might
happen if you gave yourself permission to indulge just a bit? I promise that
youll be better for it.
Have a Decadent week!

Inner Outings: The Diarist's Deck of 33 Cards and Book of
Exploration (Paperback)
by Charlene Geiss, Claudia Jessup
Charlene Geisss collage style of journaling is not only fun
to do but draws from a variety of media. Newsweek has reported on the
therapeutic benefits of confessional writing, and writing and art together
are able to pull out a deeper range of complexity and personal expression
from the journal keeper than words alone. Geiss and veteran writer Claudia
Jessup created this set of 33 cards, each corresponding to a question that
prompts the journalers imagination. The Book of Exploration elaborates upon
each card and suggests writing and drawing techniques to plumb the depths of
the journalers experience toward rich self-exploration. Black-and-white
illustrations throughout add to this tool for creative journal keeping.. From Amazaon.com Book Details.
