Last
night I enjoyed a delicious evening lying in bed with my 7-year-old
daughter while we watched a Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen movie.
We
giggled whenever anyone kissed (while Ania covered my eyes) and we
hollered "girl power" as Mary-Kate and Ashley captured the bad guys using
their quick instincts and intelligence. I had no trouble unleashing my
inner 7 year old while remembering time spent with my own mother watching teen beach movies.
It's
precious moments like these that create the memories that make life worth
living. It's not the material things that hold value, but time spent with
people we love, or time spent in solitude exploring our relationship with
things unseen.
We
all crave connection, whether to ourselves, to Spirit, or to each other.
It is in the experience of connection where we find the deepest sense of
fulfillment and joy in our lives.
As a
coach, I ask my clients to make a list of "delicious" things that bring
them joy. I notice that when they come to their next session and read
things to me from their list, that in just reading aloud to me, they come
alive. I can hear the smile on their face and the lightness in their voice
as they share their joy list with me. I remind them that the single act of
thinking about what makes them happy, has the capacity to bring joy in and
of itself.
I
then ask that they make a commitment to start doing some of those things.
In looking closer at your joy list, you will see that these are the things
that connect you. Through that connection to your self, to Spirit, or to
others comes satisfaction and enjoyment. All it takes is a commitment to
staying in the present moment and noticing what happens when you do.
What
things bring you the most pleasure? How about starting a "delicious habit"
list and adding things to it as they come? Notice that in just thinking
about the things in life that bring you joy, you feel yummy inside and
just a little bit lighter. Imagine what will happen as you start to make
some of those items a priority in your life.
