Good Morning!
Did you enjoy
the festivities last week around Earth Day? I sure did. I noticed
that after 38 years (yes, Earth Day originated in 1970), Earth Day
has finally hit its stride. It seemed like everywhere I went I
heard or read something about Earth Day. More
importantly,
I gathered lots of new ideas on ways that I can make a
contribution. I am grateful
that people are waking up to living consciously and with an
intention toward making a difference.
In the April 20th edition of
the Denver Post there was an entire pullout section of the
paper devoted to "Going Green." One article in particular caught my
attention. It was titled "Junking up the Planet: Unsolicited mail
piles up, killing trees, creating trash." I thought I'd include a
couple of facts and Web sites you can
check out
to support you in living with less clutter
and less
distraction
while
helping
to
save a few trees
along the way.
Did you know that more than
100 million trees worth of junk mail arrive in American mail boxes
each year? That's the equivalent of deforesting the entire Rocky
Mountain National Park every four months. I happen to live less
than five miles from Rocky Mountain National Park and find this
statistic alarming. The good news
is that
with a couple of clicks, you can do your part
to start easing the effect of unwanted junk mail both on the
environment and on your own peace of mind.
1) Catalog Choice is a free online service
that will notify the catalogs (that you request) not to send any
more mailings to your address. Find them at
www.catalogchoice.org.
2) By registering with the Direct Marketers
Association's Mail Preference Service, you can eliminate a lot of
the unsolicited junk mail that gets delivered to your snail
mailbox. Register at
www.dmaconsumers.org/consumerassistance.html
3) To opt out of those annoying pre-approved
credit offers simply go to
www.optoutprescreen.com
or call 1-888-567-8688.
I can tell you first hand that by registering
with these Web sites you will see a difference in the amount of
junk mail that you'll receive. What
the heck, while you're at it,
why not declare your personal space as your own by going to
www.donotcal.gov
and put yourself on a no-call list to
eliminate those pesky telemarketers as well?
