Creating the Life You Want
November, 2005

"If you are not in a state of acceptance of where you are, then you are using up your energy battling your current situation. Being in opposition to your work situation will consume valuable life energy, which can be put to much better use following your passion.
~ Justine Willis Toms and Michael Toms, True Work

That newsletter got me a lot of responses as well as an invitation to give a keynote address. Many enjoyed it, many said "yes!" But when my head is in the clouds, I have good friends like my friend Jocelyn who keep my feet on the ground by saying: "Of course, we all would, but with all that is in our every day life - HOW????"
In the independent film "What the Bleep" the work of Masaru Emoto on water crystals was shared. (I encourage you to see it for yourself if you want a mind altering experience. It's at http://www.whatthebleep.com/crystals/). Masaru Emoto also wrote a book called "The Hidden Message in Water". In that book he talks about an experiment tried by hundreds of families throughout Japan. Each put rice in three jars. Each day the family would come home from school and work and go to the jars. To the first one they would say: "Thank You." To the second one they would say: "You fool!" The third one they ignored. After a month the jar that was said "Thank You" to began to ferment into a malt. The jar that was told "You fool!" began to turn black and rot. But most interestingly the jar that was ignored began rotting before the jar that was told: "you fool!"
Mr. Emoto talked about what this meant in terms of how we treat our children, pets, and even plants. I began to think about it in terms of how we treat our habits. Have any habits you want to change? Maybe you are disorganized, or late, or unhappy with your weight. What do we normally do? We make a mistake and then beat ourselves up. "You fool!" we say to ourselves, over and over again. What would happen if instead we remained neutral and ignored the habit? What would happen if we used it as a messenger, noticing only if we were moving towards what we wanted or away from it? Yes, I was late today. Yes, I did eat the whole bag of chips. My goal is to choose differently next time. My goal is to move more the direction of my goal or at least to move less away from it.
What if we encouraged ourselves for improving? Only 10 minutes late instead of 20. 100% improvement, good start! Only bought the small bag instead of the super size this week, I'm on my way!
Using what we do as a message instead of a failure gives us the opportunity to keep focused on what we want rather than what we don't want. Since what we focus on grows, reason tells us this will take us to our goals more quickly.
Don't take my word for it. Try it yourself!
