The Importance of Choice

"Have you ever considered that the most powerful influence in your life is choice? Every solitary action, every minute of each and every day, is the result of having made a choice from alternatives available. Nothing happens solely by chance.
For example, when the alarm rings in the morning, you have the choice of staying where you are or getting out of bed; breakfast may be eaten or it may not; when the traffic light turns yellow, or even red, you may choose to stop or to ignore it and continue through the intersection. You may choose work or play, optimism or pessimism, love or hate and, indeed, even life or death. The choices nay be made in a split second or they may be the conclusion of much thought and consideration.
It is tempting to attribute happiness or unhappiness, well being or misery to certain people, circumstances or events, but we are all accountable for the final results of our choices. Some of the decisions may be more difficult than others, but every decision contributes either positively or adversely to our point of view.
Now, some may respond that this is simply not so. Some may suggest that accidents often are the result of actions or events over which they have no control. However, this is rationalization initiated by an unwillingness to accept responsibility for their results. Any excuse to opt out of accountability makes it easier to forego control and become a victim.
Above all, we choose our response to events as they occur. Choosing anger, depression, frustration or rationalization leads to ineffectiveness, while choosing to accept reality and move onward and upward leads to a positive sense of well being and achievement.
Thousands of biographies and autobiographies testify to the power of positive choices in the lives of individuals who have suffered serious afflictions or calamitous injuries and, yet, have overcome seemingly impossible odds to make significant contributions to society and to become inspirations to others. They have become outstanding artists, athletes and statesmen. To recall but a few: Terry Fox, Joni Ercikson and Rick Hansen are excellent examples of the power of positive choice.
There is no doubt that the most precious gift we have received from God, is the gift of choice.
