Feature Article: COACH YOURSELF AND OTHERS TO A SUCCESSFUL YEAR!
A
Message from Phyllis
Dear Readers,
I hope you are having a great start to the new year.
I had a coaching session with a new client last week. He hired me because he wants to grow his business. We discussed his prospective clients. He said after one meeting he hesitates to call, because he doesnt want to bother them. We discussed a change in attitude and I shared a story with him. I interviewed 53 extremely successful lawyers for my book on marketing and one of them told me a story worth repeating. When he was in the 8th grade he played second base for his school team. His Dad came to him one day and said, "son, we are moving to a new town." He was devastated because he wanted to continue to play second base. His Dad said, son, the coach at your new school is probably sitting at the dinner table right now and telling his wife that his team is great, but all he needs is a new second baseman." He moved to the new school and played second base for the team. He now uses that example to build his law practice. When he wants to call a potential client, he pictures the management team of the company sitting at a table in a conference room saying, business is great, but all we need is a new law firm. He picks up the phone and calls to introduce himself. His positive attitude encourages him to make the call and reach out. It works. He is extremely successful. Who do you want to call? What business are you going after? Think of the boy who played second base and reach out today.
Wishing you a great 2008!
Warm Regards, Phyllis

COACH YOURSELF AND OTHERS TO A SUCCESSFUL YEAR!
(I wrote this article because I am passionate about coaching. Consider working with a coach this year. Go to www.coachfederation.org and find a coach who fills your needs and make the investment in yourself. You deserve it. If you dont hire a coach, please find a buddy who can provide support and accountability. It will make a big difference for you.)
It's that time again when many of us make New Years resolutions and set new goals. In our businesses we project sales figures and predict growth. In our personal lives, we plan the changes and experiences we want to happen during the year. We often want to lose weight, exercise more, spend more time with our families and earn more money. Talking about it is the first step. Writing our goals is the next thing we often do, but what motivates us to change? Very often its the support and accountability of a colleague or a coach. A coach is someone to collaborate with and collaboration breeds creativity. A coach is not in your business or in your family. A coach isn't attached to your results. He (or she) really listens, becoming an objective, honest partner and a great sounding board. If you want to build your business or make changes in your life, your coach can help you to create a strategy and plan. If you have any staff, it is important to learn coaching skills. Having a coach will help you learn the benefits of unconditional support. It can create a model for you to duplicate in your workplace.
Would athletes ever think they could pursue a professional career without a coach? Why do businesspeople think they can excel on their own? Just for today, please allow me to be your coach It will demonstrate how to coach your staff and co-workers.
- Let's evaluate where you are now. Look honestly at your business and personal life. Where are you on your success track?
- Where do you want to be? Think ahead. What changes would you like to see in your life this year? Your coach will help you discover what you really want by looking at your values and needs.
- What are some of the challenges you are currently facing?
- Create a plan for your business and your life. You might have a business plan and a marketing plan, but do you have a life plan?
- Discuss and brainstorm your strategies for attracting what you want. Create action steps that you can take weekly to keep you on your path to success. Your coach will provide accountability, which hopefully will motivate you to take a step forward.
- Unclutter your life. In order to get new clients and new opportunities this year it is important to create space. Do you have outdated catalogues or files of discontinued products? Are there letters and memos that you will probably never need? Clutter drains you of energy. Start tossing!
- Everything takes up energy, so make this the year you simplify your life and create more energy to do the things you really want. If you have more energy you will attract more of what you want in life. Is your schedule too busy and overcrowded? Think about ways you can simplify.
- Identify your strengths and unique abilities. What are you really good at? It's so much easier to do something that's almost effortless than to struggle with a task that's a challenge for you.
- Stay focused on what you want. Ask yourself each day, "What's really important today? What must get done today?" Prioritize.
- Do complete work. As you finish one project completely it will give you clarity to go on to the next project. Rather than juggling several things at once, finish what you start.
O.K. Let's look at your plan for the year. Picture yourself in January 2009. What changes have you made? What progress have you made on your journey to designing the life you really want? Did you create a plan with weekly action steps? Did the accountability with your coach inspire you to take action? How has your staff progressed? Perhaps you can coach yourself to success. If not, take action now by getting a buddy or hiring a coach so that 2008 is everything you want it to be. You can do it. Start now. Dont procrastinate. Take a few minutes to write down five things that you want to accomplish this year. Make them big. Create the action steps to get there and lets do it!!
Happy New Year! Make this the best year ever!
