Taking Steps Toward Leadership
For the past several months in this newsletter, I have been trying to heighten your awareness about the need to take leadership of your practice, to stay ahead of the market downturn. Leadership means different things at different times, but within a sole proprietorship, leadership means taking steps to enhance these three areas: profitability, autonomy, and fulfillment. Here are some shifts that the business owners I coach encounter as they develop their leadership capacity. These shifts are from curriculum written by CoachU and published in the CoachU handbook by Wiley. (CoachU is a large coach training organization where I am currently on faculty.) See if you have made, or need to make any of the following shifts, in one or more of these three areas to help you take the next steps of leadership in your practice. Profit:
"Profit [for a business] is like oxygen, food, water, and blood for the body; they are not the point of life, but without them, there is no life." Jim Collins
Taking leadership for profitability means making these shifts: From.................................To Getting by financially..........High profitability Ups and downs..................Consistency Filling the practice..............Having a full, sustained practice Going in circles..................Growing along a path Putting wants first...............Putting integrity first, needs second, wants third Barely having enough..........Maintaining a reserve Autonomy:
"Take each new opportunity as it arises. A large area of thought goes to self-determination and self-will." Michael Nesmith
Taking leadership for autonomy means making these shifts: From.................................To Being competent................Being a master in field Reacting............................Calming down, responding Clueless.............................Focused and plans Coulds, woulds, shoulds......Creates what's possible Hoping...............................Abandons hope, initiates desires Caretakes others.................Treats others like adults Fulfillment:
"Plant the seed of desire in your mind and it forms a nucleus with power to attract to itself everything needed for its fulfillment." Robert Collier
Taking leadership for fulfillment means making these shifts: From.................................To Weak personal life..............Satisfying balance Getting ego from job...........Getting sense of self from service Hard on self........................Laughs about self, enjoys humanness. Present not good enough.....Grateful, accepting of what is Confused and stuck............Willing to take a risk Adrenaline, highs, lows.......Grounded In future newsletters, I will explore how you can specifically make these types of shifts. For now, think about these distinctions, and see what you can change in your daily actions, monthly goals, and year-long vision to help you achieve leadership in this regard.
