"January resolutions are about will. September resolutions are about authentic wants. What do you want more or less of in your life, so that you can love the life you're living?"

TOPIC: AUTUMNAL FRESH STARTS

Today is, of course, the first day of the rest of your life. We can begin each day to create a powerful future for ourselves. Certain times of the year have an inherent impetus to a fresh start than others. January is often a time of "New Year's Resolutions." In September, as children go "back to school" in the Northern Hemisphere, many adults also feel newness in their approach to their goals and plans.

In Sarah Ban Breathnach's, Simple Abundance, she suggests September fresh starts be about our authentic wants. Many times in my coaching practice, I find clients who are not in touch with what they really want. Yet, as creators of our own experience, we always know something about the things that tug at our hearts.

I suggest to my clients that they start simply with a list of what they know they DON'T want and what they know the DO want. While the specific form of the authentic want may not yet be in view, they usually know more than they thought did!

My own list a few years ago went like this:

I want less of:

Long commutes
Endless paperwork
Working just for the money
Dowdy looking clothes
Customers that don't appreciate me
Long hours

I want more of:

Free time
Time to take care of myself
Financial freedom
Control over my working life
To love what I do every day

At the time, I was commuting into NYC to work for a large corporation. While the specific FORM of my desire was yet unknown, this simple focusing allowed me to move toward what I really wanted. Eventually, a home based coaching practice was manifest.

The simple DON'T/DO or LESS/MORE listings focus our energy and attention in the right direction. Just as a plane is "off-course" during most of its journey from NY to California, it can "course correct" because the pilot is clear about the destination. The more clarity we have, the easier it is to get good feedback so we can correct our own course. We attract more information, people, guidance, etc.

In my case, I started attracting information about home-based businesses and started entertaining the idea of becoming self-employed. As I studied the opportunities further, information about the coaching profession came to me. I eventually recognized that as a good fit for my "DO wants."

Coach's challenge:

Take a sheet of paper and divide it in two sections. List your "Don't wants" on one side and your "Do wants" on the other. After you've made the list, pay attention to any ideas you get for that next "baby step" action you can take to move forward.

By the way, there are two new years coming up in case you missed the Back to School fresh start!

Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year, begins September 27th.
The Celtic New Year is celebrated on October 31st.

Happy New You!
