"The work of your life is to discover your purpose and get on with the business of living it out." ~ Oprah Winfrey

What is the Purpose of your Life?

Each person who came to the planet has a unique reason for being here. We live in a Uni-verse, which means "one song." You have a part to sing or a vibration to offer to the whole. This destiny or purpose is encoded in us before we are even born. Each of us has an idea of it, often not spoken, and sometimes not even verbalized to ourselves. Yet, we have it. Or, more accurately, "them."

I’ve been coaching many of my clients to identify their purpose(s) more clearly. Chances are that you are already living some of your purpose right now. And you may have more than one purpose.

So, why take the time to identify your purpose for being here? Because when you know why you came to the planet, you can make sure that your activities and goals are in alignment with that purpose. When you put words to the idea of your purpose, you create a wonderful filter for making decisions. When you face the inevitable forks in the road, you can size them up according to their alignment with your purpose. It serves as a container for your life’s activities. Put a choice in the container and check to see if there’s a fit.

There are many ways to get at your purpose. Mark Victor Hansen suggests we ask ourselves "What is God’s destiny for me?" (If the word "God" doesn’t resonate with you, choose one of the many other names for something far greater than yourself: the Ultimate, divine intelligence, being, God, Spirit, Love, All That Is, Higher Power, Creator, Universal Subconscious Mind, etc.)

Don’t get hung up on the perfect words. The statement of your purpose only approximates the intuitive idea of it you may already have. The purpose is bigger than the words. But words are a way of communicating it and exploring it.
Remember that this is your purpose; not your parents’, boss’s, partners’, etc. One of the ways you’ll know you are on track is if the idea gives you energy versus making you feel drained.

Here are some of my purposes:

My life’s purpose is to access my divine inner light and shine it as brightly as possible on all those around me.
My purpose is to love, laugh and live fully;
to focus my abilities and continue to expand so I can make a maximum contribution to the world in which I live.

Other examples:
To learn to love
To learn and grow as much as I can
To love and laugh fully

If it can be checked off on your list, it’s more likely to be a goal than a purpose.

Coach’s request:

Find someone safe for you to explore with (your coach, spouse, minister, best friend). Have them ask you the question repeatedly: "What’s God’s destiny for you?" and ask them to write down your answers. Keep asking the question for at least one minute and up to two or until no more answers come. Then take the words and put them together in a sentence or a paragraph.

I’d love to hear your thoughts on your purpose. Just e-mail me at smm@questcoaching.com with the SUBJECT: PURPOSE in the header.
