1. HEADLINE NEWS

A few days ago I was engaged in one of my morning addictions as a cross-trainer who bikes, runs, swims, walks, and lifts weights at least 40 minutes every day no matter where I am, or the weather outside. When it's too nasty outside I have been known to walk hotel floors, or the interior garage of my apartment building. I was on a stationary bicycle with the Washington Post and realized how the headline news reflected the world we live in, and how tragic it is given that we are all responsible for the circumstances we find ourselves in. Look at the following headlines while asking yourself: 1.) Can I really feel good about my life in the face of what's happening to other's on the planet?; and 2.) What am I motivated to do about it?

> Sharon, Bush Skirt Mideast Issues As Bomber Kills at Least 15 in Isreal
> Papers Show that Enron Manipulated Calif. Crisis
> U.S.Renounces Support of New Tribunal For War Crimes and Won't Back War Crimes Court
> Against Depression, a Sugar Pill is Hard to Beat / Placebo Effect Seen in Depression Recovery
> Key Dutch Rightist is Shot Dead
> Judge Orders Boston Cardinal To Give Deposition in Abuse Case
> Psychological Damage is Heavy In West Bank
> US Argues for Wider Gun Rights
> A Penchant for Secrecy-Terrorist Attacks Alter the Balance Between Individual Rights and National Security

2. LETTING GO - THE MIDDLE EAST SOLUTION

I am finally getting a vision of what needs to happen to generate peace in the middle-east. The Resolution of any Conflict has two essentail components - LETTING GO and FORGIVENESS. Letting go is the realization that the current cost of remaining in the conflict is not worth trying to prevail. Thinking of "winning" comes from a mistaken belief that "you" are right, "they" are wrong, and "you" will prevail. Forgiveness is developing the intention to forgive, and letting the conflict fade into history even though you currently still feel anger. Resolution in the middle-east will not happen at a political or military level. It will emerge from a grass roots effort that percolates from the deep desire of ordinary people to live ordinary lives. Every town in Isreal, and every town in the West Bank and the Gaza Strip must begin with a vision of peace - a picture of what life would be like without the terror everyone has been living. Everyone must take off their suit of war and have the courage to put on an armor for peace, and march toward that vision. As the momentum for peace gains force, the politicians rhetoric of the past will be left behind, and a new reality can emerge as people focus on trade, education and building a better life for everyone. This is the vision on which we must all place our attention.

3. DECALOGUE

In January a meeting was held in Assisi, the home of St Francis. Present were all the world religious leaders. It was not widely reported. As you look at the content please ask yourself why we as a species won't muster the courage to make these principles the reality we live in as we passively accept the headlines above as life when there is an alternative.

*****************

I observed that those who took part in the Assisi Meeting were more than ever motivated by a common conviction: humanity must choose between love and hatred. All of them, feeling that they belong to one and the same human family, were able to express their aspiration through these ten points, convinced that if hatred destroys, love, on the contrary, builds up.

I hope that the spirit and commitment of Assisi will lead all people of goodwill to seek truth, justice, freedom and love, so that every human person may enjoy his inalienable rights and every people, peace. For her part, the Catholic Church, who trusts and hopes in "the God of love and peace" (II Cor 13,11), will continue to work for loyal dialogue, reciprocal forgiveness and mutual harmony to clear the way for people in this third millenium.

With gratitude to Your Excellency, for the attention you will be kind enough to give my Message, I take the present opportunity offered to assure you of my prayerful best wishes.

From the Vatican, 24 February 2002.

Decalogue of Assisi for Peace

1. We commit ourselves to proclaiming our firm conviction that violence and terrorism are incompatible with the authentic spirit of religion, and, as we condemn every recourse to violence and war in the name of God or of religion, we commit ourselves to doing everything possible to eliminate the root causes of terrorism.

2. We commit ourselves to educating people to mutual respect and esteem, in order to help bring about a peaceful and fraternal coexistence between people of different ethnic groups, cultures and religions.

3. We commit ourselves to fostering the culture of dialogue, so that there will be an increase of understanding and mutual trust between individuals and among peoples, for these are the premise of authentic peace.

4. We commit ourselves to defending the right of everyone to live a decent life in accordance with their own cultural identity, and to form freely a family of his own.

5. We commit ourselves to frank and patient dialogue, refusing to consider our differences as an insurmountable barrier, but recognizing instead that to encounter the diversity of others can become an opportunity for greater reciprocal understanding.

6. We commit ourselves to forgiving one another for past and present errors and prejudices, and to supporting one another in a common effort both to overcome selfishness and arrogance, hatred and violence, and to learn from the past that peace without justice is no true peace.

7. We commit ourselves to taking the side of the poor and the helpless, to speaking out for those who have no voice and to working effectively to change these situations, out of the convinction that no one can be happy alone.

8. We commit ourselves to taking up the cry of those who refuse to be resigned to violence and evil, and we are desire to make every effort possible to offer the men and women of our time real hope for justice and peace.

9. We commit ourselves to encouraging all efforts to promote friendship between peoples, for we are convinced that, in the absence of solidarity and understanding between peoples, technological progress exposes the world to a growing risk of destruction and death.

10. We commit ourselves to urging leaders of nations to make every effort to create and consolidate, on the national and international levels, a world of solidarity and peace based on justice.

4. "BALANCING ACT" FROM ALAN WEISS

Alan Weiss is the Consultant's Consultant. He has written bestselling books and delivered applauded SRO programs. His complimentary monthly newsletter "Balancing Act" always contains gems. You can subscribe at www.summitconsulting.com The following advice will certainly help point you toward a place of more balance - the only perspective from which resolution of any kind is possible.

******************

I ask every executive whom I coach this question before any other: Are
you having fun? The intention is to co-opt the conversation, and arrive at an emotional level rather than a superficial discussion of work priorities and time demands. But it's also a fundamentally logical question: Are you enjoying yourself, are you well off by your own measures, are you feeling good about yourself?

These questions and their truthful answers are far more important than
how much time you devote to family, business, social events, hobbies, or spirituality (even if you could cleanly compartmentalize your life, which I doubt that you can). Here are some questions, a sort of self-test, which may be useful in thinking about your state of "balance." ("An unexamined life is not worth living," observed Aristotle.) In no special priority order:

- Talent fulfillment: Are my talents as I perceive them being utilized, challenged, and stretched, and am I able to develop new and diverse talents?
- Object of interest: Am I growing as an object of interest to others, am I sought out as a valuable resource, am I able to increasingly assist others?
- Time control: Do I have increasing flexibility and influence over how I allocate my time, and do I have increasing discretionary time to allocate?
- Passion: Are there people and pursuits in my life who and which enthrall me and gain total commitment, focus, and support? Do I love without qualification or equivocation?
My "test" is simply a bit of a provocation. But if you are challenged, sought by others, controlling your time, and passionate about people and pursuits, I would suggest, upon examination, you lead a life highly worth living.

5. NOON MEDITATIONS

I have been recieving reports from many of you that your five minute noon meditations on peace in the middle east are creating mindfullness and a feeling of doing something. I am asking you to expand that practice. Thought and a vision of the future are the first step in creating any reality. An architect first drawsa plan then assembles the resources to build the structure. So too creating a planet that works for all requires a vision. I ask you to spend five minutes each day at noon creating a vision of a world that is thriving, the kind of a world you want to live and fully participate in. Let that be the beginning of your hope for the future. Let yourself start to live in that world.

If you have not already done so check out the vision provided at http://dailymotivator.com/memberflash/rightnow.html

6. THE BOOK OF AGREEMENT

This week I will be finalizing the manuscript for the book of agreement. I'm very excited about the project and so are others. It reveals much of the work I've been doing over the past 14 years. Two weeks ago I attented an "Author's Day at my publisher Berrett-Koehler. This is a unique event within the publishing industry. For every book they publish the entire staff gathers for the day in which the author does their best to explain the message of the book and enroll everone in helping deliver that message. The high point of the day for me was reaching an agreement with the entire staff to make "The Book of Agreement" a New York Times Bestseller. Here's what people are saying about the book:

"We all want agreement. Here's how to get it and keep it and work it"

-Mark Victor Hansen, Co-creator, #1 New Your Times best selling series "Chicken Soup for the Soul"(R)

"Stewart Levine delivers on his agreement with the reader to provide a powerful vision and practical tools that turn potential business and personal conflicts into collaborative partnerships."

Nina B. Link, CEO, Magazine Publishers Association of America

"Years of experience inform this thought-provoking book. It brought to mind many experiences in which I succeeded or failed. Now, I know why! This book combines lofty aspiration with on-the-ground application. It speaks to your ideals and your practicality. Stewart describes the agreements we aspire to, tells you how to avoid the calamities you fear, and how to get the results you want."

Geoff Bellman, Consultant and "Author of Getting Things Done When You Are Not in Charge"

"The Book of Agreement contains all the models you'll ever need to protect questionable relationships and nurture strong relationships. It puts some iron in the handshake."

Alan Weiss, PhD., Author, "The Ultimate Consultant"

"Every year in law schools across the country, each new generation of future lawyers learn to reproduce the mistrust that is the great tragedy of our individualistic and isolating society by learning that the purpose of legal agreements, or contracts, is to protect you from the Other, that stranger at arm's length who is out to exploit you for his or her own self-interest. Stewart Levine begins from the exact opposite premise--that the purpose of agreement is to build a bridge to the Other and to realize your common aspiration for connection. Writ large, this idea would revolutionize the study and practice of law and help to realize our spiritual nature as social beings in pursuit of mutual affirmation."

Peter Gabel, Professor of Contract Law, New College Law School; Associate Editor of Tikkun Magazine; President of the Board of New College of California; Director of the Institute for Spirituality and Politics

7. COMMUNION

I wrote the following poem after a retreat of 30 Berrett-Koehler authors that was a great example of what's possible in the world.

COMMUNION

Now in this moment, here in this time
I'll show you yours, please show me mine
Reveling each other, allow being known
With each conversation, the more we unfold

So, naked, and open, our innocence revealed
In our sacred exchange, each one is healed
And as we journey forward, uncovering more
Deliverance assured, whatever that's for

The smiles and the laughter, that emerge in each breathe
The sublime expression, of exchanged tenderness
The warmth that is passing, from being to being
Takes place in a dream state, that's beneath our seeing

And when you realize, what is going on
That holy communion, provides a new dawn
The smile and the knowing you wear on your face
Embody the inside, and represent grace

Stay mindful and tender, and pure of intention
Enable admittance to another dimension
Respect and cherish, the honor bestowed
Bless the love that comforts, as you travel the road

8. MILLIONAIRE EAGLES

In my formative thinking about politics I was taken by the writings of Ayn Rand. The principle message for me was that in a capitalist world the focus is on what you can create, while in a socialist world the focus is on need. I realize this is an oversimplification, but for me it was obvious that one breeds productivity while the other breeds neediness. I have know for a time that creating a world we are all proud to live in requires elevating our standards across the board. I have recently become involved with the "Millionaire Eagles" program created by Mark Victor Hansen and Robert Allen. Mark is the co-creator of the "Chicken Soup for the Soul Series" and Robert is the author of two of the largest selling financial books in history; both #1 New York Times best sellers.

The vision is to quickly create 1,000,000 ENLIGHTENED MILLIONAIREs as a way to seed the better world we all aspire to. IT IS WORKING. The program is much more about attitude, philosophy, charity, humanity and the secrets of planetary wisdom than about making money. A key part of the program for me has been working with the ideas in the book "Attracting Perfect Customers" by Stacey Hall and Jan Brogniez. It's about how our power of vision and intention can attract to us the life we want as we become a lighthouse like beacon attracting people to us. Check out www.MillEagles.com and let me know if you have an interest. I guarantee it will be a life changing experience.
