"RESOLUTIONARY IDEAS " FOR PEOPLE MAKING A DIFFERENCE STEWART LEVINE, Esq., RESOLUTIONARY ********************************************************************** ************************************************* I've been very quiet for the past couple of months. Very busy, but very quiet. I've been doing reflecting and processing some of the events of the past few years, and how others are reacting to it. When I was waiting to go through airport security this morning I realized how different the mood of ther coiuntry was from what it was three years ago. I observe a shift from excitement and expectation to fear and sadness Ernest Hemingway said "I think a lot and write very little." So I've been thinking a lot.The pieces are falling together. I'm about to begin a children's book on conflict resolution; publish a book of poems; launch a new website; begin training and certifying "Resolutionary's;" and launch a "rejuvination" cruise for lawyers that will provide skills, and change the way lawyers relate to their parcties and their clients. Given a 65% unhappiness rate something has to be done! And some very exciting speaking events are coming my way. I think the kids book is very important because kids are the future. If we can create a buzz within which kids learn to relate to conflict differently we can change the world very quickly! There are currently more than 1,000,000 lawyers in the U.S. This is highly intelligent group of trained critical thinkers and observers. If we can shift the direction and mindset of lawyers a bit the reverberations will be heard round the world. It is like changing the course of a battleship - a massive undertaking, but once you get it headed in the right direction, look out!!! TIKKUN ISREAL / PALESTINE MEDIATION I have been working with a group of lawyers active in an organization called Tikkun. The literal translation of "Tikkun Olam" is "to heal the earth." This was god's commandment and direction to the Jewish people. Rabbi Michael Lerner started Tikkun Magazine in 1985 and the Tikkun Community last year. From June 1-4 the On Sunday June 1, 2003 I will be using a form of my "Resolutionary" process to facilitate a mock dialogue between the Israeli and Palestinian points of view. I feel honored to be participating and I'm excited about what will happen when an outstanding group of lawyers articulates and advocates the legal, spiritual, historic and other sides of the conflict. My hope is that this process, which does not have the historic, political, diplomatic, or economic baggage getting in the way of resolution will reveal new insights and possibilities. It's the story of a group of indigenous people who are wandering the earth in search of what's lost and missing. They had the expectation that they would find what was mising and all would be restored. After a great deal of wandering and soul searching the goup finally realized they were both the problem, and the solution. That certainly seems a great admonition and realization for all of us today. ********************************************************************** I was recently asked to be a principal speaker and workshop leader at a conference in London sponsored by a top Swiss Business School discussing ways in which business organizations can contribute to a peaceful planet. It's a wonderful expression of her movement, her giving herself over to her hopelessness and finding something on the other side....so well expressed. Her words link to my own thoughts. Many of my dear friends who are more idealistic than I, more hopeful of a coming transformation, more engaged with the huge and immediate potential of humankind, more believing that we are at a creative cusp in human history, etc, etc, etc... I see those friends (who have been feeling this way over the last many years) are particularly hard hit by what they see going on in the world now. My current belief is that their feelings of hopelessness come out of holding a distorted sense of what is possible now....not what is possible in thirty generations, but what is possible now. Our challenge is to embrace/enfold the current reality...to accept it as real...to hold it ...maybe like a friend we love and hate at the same time. And while entangled in that embrace, to be our better selves and lean toward the future we want to create. A future that is not in our lifetime, or our children's children's childrens lifetime...but a future that is worth giving our lives to.
