The Resolutionary

November 22, 2007

Hello Friends,

I just returned from five days visiting a dear friend and her family. She is not doing well. Though very challenging from a spiritual and emotional perspective I am reminded of the famous Ram Das story. At some point after he left Harvard he was in the middle of a six month retreat with an order of Tibetan Buddhist Monks when his father became gravely ill. When the news reached him he wet to the monks who assumed he would stay and then tend to his father. Much to their surprise he immediately left and began the oddyssey of caring for his father in the last year of his life. In retrospect he says that the growth he experienced juast being with his father for that year was more important than any book, teacher or spiritual practice he was ever engaged in. My experience was certainly transformational. Being in such a parallel universe provides immediate perspective about what's important.

I am pleased to send the following two poems as my holiday offering. One is about waking up, the other about change. May this holiday bless you with the gift of being truly awake, and the ability to chose your future and the changes you desire for yourself, your loved ones and the human species in this time of challenge.

Peace,

Stewart

If you knew the secret history

of those you would like to punish

you would find a sorrow and suffering

enough to disarm, all your hostility

                    AWAKENING

All of a sudden, the slate is wiped clean

Whatever is present is gone like a dream

Whatever was gripping and had you in chains

Has let go and released, no longer remains

The joy that you relish is waiting for you

Just step into each moment, let go of the blue

The sanctified blessings that you have earned

Please cherish their presence, for oh how you've yearned

Gone are the demons and chattering mind

All of the insane has been left behind

Somehow you've arisen, awakened in love

You have been blessed by god's high above

The noble inheritance that is yours is real

The bearing you carry please let it reveal

Step into the now now, let it quench your thirst

No need to be second, you have earned your first

All of your wishes have all come true

The gift of your giving comes back to you

No need to be striving, it's already done

Hold onto your presence, you have just begun

                               CHANGE

Nothing is static that is truly alive

The fact that we grow is a sign that we thrive

All we need do is think things are clear

Then while we blink, our attention has shifted gears

The complacent among us likes things to remain

They resist the changes that life force sustains

But stars shift and winds blow, and cells rearrange

And suddenly our “bedrock” all seems so strange

What does this teach us, what does this say

What are the voices, that describe this play

Look for the answers, inside your own soul

Look for the teachers that help you grow old

Trust your own voices, measure your energy

Do not forget questing, that broke you free

So when you return to familiar space

When you cirlce around and revisit a place

Remember that tho it might appear quite the same

Your soul, it has shifted, with no one to blame

So as you ride the current, and you ride the tide

Remember your godhead, trust the counsel inside
