Quote of the Month:

Live each day as you would climb a mountain.
An occasional glance toward the summit keeps the goal in mind,
but many beautiful scenes are to be observed
from each new vantage point.
Climb slowly, steadily, enjoying each passing moment,
and the view from the summit will serve as a
fitting climax for the journey,
Harold B. Melcart

Embracing Change

Continuous change is inevitable and essential to life. In fact, change is the only constant in life. Yet, few of us are comfortable with it. We spend a great deal of energy avoiding it, denying it, and postponing it for as long as possible. When change is forced upon us, we become impatient. We want things fixed instantly and permanently. So we adopt ‘the change by replacement method’; if it’s broken, throw it away and get a new one. It’s an all or nothing approach that requires no internal growth or understanding.
If we step out of our controlled environment and look at the natural world around us, we receive a very different message about change. Look at any living thing, a sunflower seed for example, and we see that growth occurs from the inside out. It takes time and happens gradually. Then dramatically, incremental growth blossoms into a major transformation.
When dealing with life’s transitions, we can also turn to nature’s example of the four seasons. In fall, when imminent change is showing its colors, its time to gather our harvest, create a refuge, and put our supports in place. Next we need time to winter, to turn inward for reflection and begin shedding our old beliefs. Once we have gained new insights and developed a plan, we can spring into action, till the soil, and plant the seeds of our new identity or venture. After all the reflection and hard work, we are then ready to enjoy the summer and allow the fruits of our labor to ripen.
By emerging ourselves in nature, we can learn to know ourselves. By recognizing and honoring the rhythms and patterns in nature, we can learn to move gracefully through life’s ups and downs.
Resisting change is futile! Change is growth. If we learn to embrace it, imagine all the time and energy we would save, and all the possibilities that will be opened to us.

Nature’s Coaching Tips:

Spring is finally here in the Northeast. The daffodils and tulips, the cherry and apple tress are all blossoming. It is a glorious beautiful warm day!
But exactly one week ago today, I awoke to howling winds and blizzard like conditions. The look on the primroses and pansies’ faces mirrored my own shocked expression. But these early spring explorers are built to withstand the sporadic spring storms. They have quietly been preparing and fortifying themselves all winter and will not be easily deterred from declaring their beauty.
So as you venture forth with new growth and new beginnings, you need to be mindful that these sudden spring storms may occur. Just sit tight and know that they will soon pass. Use the time to take stock. Is your foundation still solid? Are you ready to continue on? Do you need some pruning, some added support or time to regroup? Once you have reaffirmed your readiness, rest easy, assured that “the sun will come out tomorrow.”
