Quote of the Month:

A WOMAN SHOULD HAVE ...
enough money within her control to move out
and rent a place of her own, even if she never wants to or needs to...

A WOMAN SHOULD HAVE ...
something perfect to wear if the employer, or date of her dreams wants to see her in an hour...

A WOMAN SHOULD HAVE ..
a youth she's content to leave behind....

A WOMAN SHOULD HAVE ...
a past juicy enough that she's looking forward to
retelling it in her old age....

A WOMAN SHOULD HAVE ... ..
a set of screwdrivers, a cordless drill, and a black lace bra...

A WOMAN SHOULD HAVE .
one friend who always makes her laugh... and one who lets her cry...

A WOMAN SHOULD HAVE ....
a good piece of furniture not previously owned by anyone else in her family...

A WOMAN SHOULD HAVE ...
eight matching plates, wine glasses with stems, and a recipe for a meal, that will make her guests feel honored...

A WOMAN SHOULD HAVE ...
a feeling of control over her destiny.

EVERY WOMAN SHOULD KNOW...
how to fall in love without losing herself.

EVERY WOMAN SHOULD KNOW...
how to quit a job, break up with a lover, and confront a friend without; ruining the friendship..

EVERY WOMAN SHOULD KNOW...
when to try harder... and WHEN TO WALK AWAY...

EVERY WOMAN SHOULD KNOW...
that she can't change the length of her calves,
the width of her hips, or the nature of her parents..

EVERY WOMAN SHOULD KNOW...
that her childhood may not have been perfect...but its over...

EVERY WOMAN SHOULD KNOW...
what she would and wouldn't do for love or more...

EVERY WOMAN SHOULD KNOW...
how to live alone... even if she doesn't like it...

EVERY WOMAN SHOULD KNOW..
whom she can trust,
whom she can't,
and why she shouldn't take it personally...

EVERY WOMAN SHOULD KNOW...
where to go...
be it to her best friend's kitchen table...
or a charming inn in the woods...
when her soul needs soothing...

EVERY WOMAN SHOULD KNOW...
what she can and can't accomplish in a day...
a month...and a year...

A SUMMER WITHOUT SHOULDS

A friend sent me the above poem by Maya Angelou and I thought it worthy to pass on to all of you. It inspires me because of its message to be resourceful, free spirited, and authentic - all qualities that Maya Angelou beautifully exemplifies.
Summer is a perfect time to re-ignite those qualities within yourself. It is a time to enjoy the bounties of your life and to reconnect with your childhood joys. What have you always loved doing but just not had the time for lately? Schedule a date to do it this summer! What luxurious treat would love to savor? Schedule a time to enjoy it this summer! Who would you really like to spend some quality time with? Give them a call and find some time to be together?
I do beg to differ with Maya Angelou’s use of the word ‘should.’ Perhaps I am being too literal, but to me a ‘should’ is an imposition the outer world imposes upon me or a perceived notion of obligation I impose on myself. Any of my actions that arise from “I should…” do not come from my heart. A ‘should’ is just another way to beat myself up. It is neither self-empowering nor life- enhancing. Unlike “I want…” or I need…” it also deflects my personal responsibility of choice.
So I offer for your consideration a worthy motto for the summer,
“STOP ‘SHOULDING’ ON YOURSELF!”
Have your days be a reflection of who you truly are. Have fun and let your inner child run free. Write your own poem, “This woman needs…” and start fulfilling those dreams. Be joyful, be light, and have a great summer!

Nature’s Coaching Tips:

Summer storms can come upon you unexpectedly.
A few weekends ago, my husband and I went for a hike on a beautiful day. When we were nearing the top of the mountain, we were suddenly in the midst of a horrific storm with lightning, thunder and hail.
We found some meager covering under a large bush and stood there hugging each other for warmth and trying to keep at least part of us dry.
After about fourty minutes the storm passed and the sun came out. We continued on our hike but soon came upon a mother black bear and her cub only twenty yards away from us. She too passed us by and again we continued on. All was well until we were half way down the mountain and another storm hit. This time it didn't faze us in the least and we kept on walking.
Remarkably we enjoyed the day and had a good laugh. This month marks our 32nd wedding anniversary. We are still having adventures together and we weathered an unexpected storm with perhaps the longest hug of our relationship. It reminded me of a plaque at home that says, "Marriages are made in heaven and so are thunder and lightning."
So nature's metaphor for the day : Summer storms are often strong but short. Find shelter, enjoy each other, and carry on.
